The Roman Catholic parish church of St. Johannes Apostel in Dernau , a local parish in the Ahrweiler district ( Rhineland-Palatinate ), was consecrated to the Apostle Johannes in 1763 .

history

A church in Dernau is first mentioned in the sources in 1147. In 1289, the married couple Siegfried and Greta von Dernau founded a hospital with a chapel for the poor and the sick in honor of Pope Silvester I , which today serves as a sacristy . 1448 bought the monastery Marienthal the patronage pin Rees from. The Marienthal Monastery , which, as the recipient of the church mortgage, was obliged to build, had a new church built after long disputes, which was consecrated on June 12, 1763.

In 1774 the two side altars were added and in 1782 the high altar was consecrated. With the dissolution of the Marienthal Monastery ( secularization ) in 1802, Dernau became an independent parish in the Diocese of Aachen .

architecture

The hall construction from quarry stone has a mansard roof . In 1869 the west tower was built on the foundations of the old tower from the 15th century. From 1924 to 1926 the church was renovated and the organ gallery was expanded. Finally, in 1963, an extension was added on the south side. During the renovation from 1999 to 2004, the old wall painting and the baroque furnishings were restored as far as possible.

Under today's baroque high altar there are still altar plates from the time before 1763. This high altar from 1782 has a 9.50 m high column structure . In the middle part, the coronation of Mary as Queen of Heaven is shown in a picture . The upper part of the high altar shows the so-called phoenix , which rises from the flame and is interpreted as a symbol for the resurrection .

The right side altar is dedicated to St. New Year's Eve, St. Quirinus and St. Dedicated to Sebastian . In the middle of the altar are the sculptures of the saints Silvester and Sebastian.

The left side altar is of the Immaculate Conception and St. Dedicated to Anna , the mother of Mary. In the middle stands Mary and above St. Anna.

The new celebration altar from 2000 is made of red marble ( Rosso Verona ). A relic of Blessed Adolph Kolping is set in a sepulcrum closed with lead crystal .

Holy figures

About the choir doors , the wooden sculptures of St. stand. John and St. Quirinus from the Rococo period . On the walls of the nave there are other saints on Baroque consoles : Aloisius (18th century), Augustine , Antonius of Padua (1770), Matthias (17th century), Josef , Johannes Nepomuk (1770) and Jodokus . In the side aisle there is the Mother of God in a halo, called Mary Queen, from the 17th century.

organ

The communion bench from 1700 was reused as the parapet of the organ gallery. The old baroque organ (18th century) was converted and expanded into an electric organ by the Klais company in 1933 , whereby the old organ prospectus was retained.

Baptismal font

The Romanesque baptismal font made of basalt lava is said to date from around 1230. The baroque marble font, acquired in 1925, is now used as a holy water font .

Steeple

The church tower, built in 1869, has a church clock whose dials have the letters of the name Jesus Xristus (from ancient Greek Ἰησούς Χριστός ) as numerals .

There are three bells hanging in the tower , the oldest of which was cast in 1385.
