The Catholic Church of St. Laurentius in Pflugdorf , a district of the municipality of Vilgertshofen in the Upper Bavarian district of Landsberg am Lech , was built on the site of one or more medieval or early modern predecessor buildings in the middle of the 18th century in the Rococo style. The church, consecrated to the saint and martyr Laurentius of Rome , is a branch church of the Stadl mother parish in the diocese of Augsburg and is one of the protected architectural monuments in Bavaria.

history

The parish of Pflugdorf was first mentioned in writing in 1420. In 1598 it came into the possession of the Andechs Benedictine monastery , which had an existing church enlarged in 1608. Around 1755/58 the abbot Bernhard Schütz had a new church built by the Munich court mason Lorenz Sappel on a hill south of the village square. During the exterior renovation in 1981, the structure of the pilasters, which was painted in pink, was exposed again.

architecture

Exterior construction

In front of the west facade is the bell tower, the corner pilasters and cornice structure of which, like those of the entire exterior, are painted on. The tower consists of a five-storey substructure, which comes from a previous church, and an octagonal structure with a curved cornice. It is crowned by an onion cap with a pointed attachment. The sacristy covered with a hipped roof is added to the southern choir corner . The portal is equipped with a gable roof covered and broken by an oval window sign off the west axis of the southern nave integrated. In the gable of the sign, there is a figure of St. Lawrence, the church patron , in a niche .

West gallery

inner space

The single-nave nave is divided into three axes and is covered by a flat barrel vault with stitch caps that rest on sturdy beams . A high round arch leads to the drawn-in, three-sided closed choir, which is also vaulted by a needle cap barrel. A double gallery with straight balustrades forms the western end of the nave .

Gallery pictures

The pictures in the lower gallery are attributed to Johann Baptist Baader (around 1717–1780), who is also known as Lechmaler or Lechhansl , or the Lüftlmaler Franz Seraph Zwinck (1748–1792) from Oberammergau. They show further scenes from the legend of St. Lawrence. On the left he is adopted by Pope Sixtus II , who also died a martyr's death under Emperor Valerian, in the middle Laurentius distributes the treasures of the church and on the right he is tortured.

Ceiling frescoes

The ceiling frescoes in the choir and nave were painted around 1757. They are not signed and are attributed to Johann Baptist Zimmermann (1680–1758) and his workshop. The frescoes are dedicated to St. Lawrence, the patron saint of the church. On the nave fresco he stands in front of the Emperor Valerian , on the choir fresco he holds the martyr's palm in his hand. An angel carries the grate on which he suffered the martyrdom, two other angels hand him the laurel wreath. Laurentius is represented as a deacon , dressed in a dalmatic . The emblematic representations on the stitch caps are in monochrome colors, in gray and sepia tones.

Piece

The fine stucco decoration in the Rococo style , set in gold , was made by an unknown master, behind whom Tassilo (also Thassilo) Zöpf (1723-1807) from Wessobrunn is believed. The ceiling frescoes are framed by profiled stucco frames, the smaller, emblematic representations are framed by rocaille cartouches , and the apostle chandeliers are surrounded by tendrils. In the stucco cartouche above the choir arch you can see the double coat of arms of the Andechs monastery and the abbot Bernhard Schütz, who commissioned the building of the church.

Furnishing

High altar
  • The stage-like high altar made of stucco marble , like the two side altars, dates from the construction period and is a work by Tassilo Zöpf. The white wooden figures of Saint Vitus and Saint Stephen as well as the figures of Saint Florian and Johannes Nepomuk above the side passages were created in the workshop of Franz Xaver Schmädl . The altar sheet shows the martyrdom of the church patron, the extract shows the archangel Michael with the soul scales. Both pictures, like those of the side altars, were painted by Johann Baptist Baader. On the altar sheet of the left side altar is the passage of the Virgin Mary and St. Barbara in the extract . The painting on the right altar, which is marked with the year 1760, depicts St. New Year's Eve and the extract depicts St. Catherine .
  • The small apostle figures above the consecration crosses are works from the middle of the 18th century.
  • The small-figure Madonna and Child in a halo on the south wall of the nave is dated to the second half of the 17th century.
  • The white and gold-plated pulpit has the coat of arms of the Andechs abbot Johann VI on its sound cover . Baptist Bergmann, who donated it to the church in 1776. The basket is decorated with twisted columns.
  • The 14 oil paintings of the Stations of the Cross are provided with gold-plated rococo frames and date from the mid-18th century.
  • Opposite the entrance hangs a panel painting framed by turned columns and a blown gable depicting St. Lawrence, which is dated before 1700.
  • The church has a nativity scene with over 200 figures, which were probably made in the Luidlwerkstatt in Landsberg am Lech after 1700 and whose original robes are still partially preserved.
