Building description

The Benedictine Abbey of Saalfeld first built a wooden church in medieval times . It was later replaced by a stone chapel , from which the foundation walls of the Romanesque hall church with choir tower come. It was rebuilt in the Gothic period. This is evidenced by an old tablet that gives the year MCCCCXXV (1425). In 1761 the church was redesigned in baroque style . In 1864 the nave was extended to the west and the facade was redesigned in a new Romanesque style. Corner turrets and an eaves cornice were added. The church tower has an eight - sided slate - roofed tower in which the belfry with three bells is located. One bell is made of bronze, cast in the 1920s. The other two are made of steel, cast in a bell foundry in Apolda in 1954 . The tower is covered with a dome that supports an open lantern , also slated. The interior has two-storey galleries and a flat ceiling on which a painted canvas shows the outpouring of the Holy Spirit and the resurrection of Jesus Christ . It was renewed in 1896 and restored by Georg Thümmler in the 1970s.

Furnishing

On the altar there are medallions of the four evangelists , with Christ on the cross in the center . The pulpit altar is decorated with carved festoons from the Baroque period. The gallery surrounding it is supported by two life-size sculptures , Moses with the tablets of the law and John the Baptist . Between them stands a crucifixion group that shows the date 1737. The old lecture cross is dated 1738 . The plaster baptismal angel holding a cornucopia is dated to 1756. The baptismal font is a faience bowl from a Thuringian workshop. Two statues , King David and Johann Sebastian Bach symbolize church music . An organ with 10 registers , divided into two manuals and a pedal , was built by an unknown organ builder around 1850 .
