history

The first settlers in the middle Gailtal were probably around 600 Slavic immigrants; later, when Carinthia was annexed by the Frankish Empire in the 8th century , this resulted in the settlement of Bavaria and the Christianization of the area. The parish church in St. Stefan im Gailtal, St. St Stephen, was founded in the 9th century, a church is first mentioned in a document in 1252.

The middle Gailtal belonged to the bishopric of Bamberg for a long time until there were disputes with the Counts of Gorizia in the 13th century , which resulted in the destruction of Vorderberg Castle. After the reconstruction, it was destroyed again in 1460 and then not rebuilt. Around 1500 the Gailtal came partially into the possession of the Habsburgs .

The history of the community is accompanied by numerous fires, which Aichelburg finally fell victim to in 1691, and the flooding of the Gail .

From 1850, today's local congregations were founded in Carinthia . Today's municipal area largely coincides with the Aichelburg district court, which existed until 1848, but in 1850 two local churches, St. Stefan an der Gail (1,983 inhabitants) and Vorderberg (681 inhabitants), were founded. They were merged with the municipal structural reform of 1973, but the combined number of inhabitants had now fallen to 1,900. As a result, Vorderberg strived for renewed independence, but in a referendum on December 9, 1990, only 42.1% of those eligible to vote were able to do so. In 1993 the community name was changed to St. Stefan im Gailtal.

In 1924 the parishes of St. Stefan / Štefan na Zilji , Vorderberg / Blače and St. Paul / Šentpavel na Zilji were Slovenian parishes, only the branch church in Bodenhof Castle was run in Germany.

population

According to the 2001 census, St. Stefan has 1,777 inhabitants, of which 97.0% are Austrian and 1.7% German citizens. 91.7% profess the Roman Catholic , 4.5% the Protestant Church and 0.8% Islam . 2.6% of the population have no religious beliefs.

  • The parish church of St. Stefan , first mentioned in a document in 1275 and eponymous for the village and the community, was originally a noble own church.
