history

The city's technical office, in collaboration with engineer Terenzio Tavolaro, began designing the new stadium on October 7, 1958. On May 25, 1959, the Technical Commission for Sports Facilities of the CONI approved the project. Work on the first phase of construction began on January 19, 1961 and was completed on March 18, 1963. The costs for this amounted to 214 million Italian lira . The second phase, slightly cheaper, extended from October 23, 1963 to July 1964. At that time, the horseshoe-shaped stadium from the two long sides in the west and east and the south curve offered 19,200 seats. The official inauguration took place in the Palazzo dei Bruzi, the seat of the municipality, in the presence of u. a. Mayor Mario Stancati and Oreste Granillo , CONI Regional President of the Province of Reggio Calabria . On November 1, 1967, the first and so far only international match of the Italian national football team was played in the stadium. The Squadra Azzurra met in the qualification for the European Football Championship 1968 on the national team of Cyprus . The game ended with a clear 5-0 home win with three goals from Luigi Riva and two goals from Sandro Mazzola .

From the end of the 1970s, the auditorium was separated from the interior by a ditch. In 1983 a floodlight system added to the sports facility. There is a canopy over the tiers on the main and opposite stands. From the 1988/89 season to 1996/97 Cosenza Calcio played in the second-rate series B . To this end, the Stadio San Vito was adapted and expanded several times from the late 1980s to the early 1990s to meet the requirements of the league. The biggest change was the construction of the north curve in 1993. It closed the gap in the surrounding grandstand ring. In 2007, the light blue striped athletics facility with a 400 m lane and six lanes was renewed. On December 3, 2008, the new changing rooms for soccer and other sports teams were officially inaugurated. The new premises under the north curve also included a fully equipped fitness studio and press area as well as the official Cosenza Calcio fan shop . In 2011 the lighting system was modernized.

On July 20, 2015, Cosenza's mayor Mario Occhiuto announced that the municipal facility would be named after Luigi "Gigi" Marulla , the former player and coach of Cosenza Calcio, who had died the day before at the age of 52. On September 21 of that year, it was officially renamed Stadio San Vito - Gigi Marulla . Cosenza rose back to Serie B in 2018. In the summer u. a. New plastic seats in the club colors red and blue were installed in the stands. This reduced the available space from 24,479 to 20,987 seats. In addition, the playing field received a new lawn.

In the summer months the stadium became a concert arena. So occurred u. a. already Bob Dylan (2006), Deep Purple (2003), Sting (1993), Piero Pelù (2004), Gianni Morandi (1972), Zucchero (1993), Ligabue (2002, 2008), Antonello Venditti (1987, 1992, 1996 ) and Vasco Rossi (1987, 1996, 1999, 2007).
