Starving ( English for "starve") is a song by the US pop singer Hailee Steinfeld and the US EDM duo Gray in cooperation with the German - Russian DJ Zedd .
Creation and artwork
The song was written jointly by the two Gray members Kyle and Michael Trewartha as well as Robert McCurdy, Christopher Petrosino and Asia Whiteacre. The producers were the two Gray members and Zedd, who also mixed the single in collaboration with Tom Norris. The mastering was done by Gray and Norris. The piece was programmed under the direction of Gray. Was arranged Starving added his assistant Chris "Tek" O'Ryan by Ryan Shanahan and Zedd and under the direction of Ryan Shanahan and. The single was released under the Republic Records label and distributed through Universal Music Publishing . On the cover of the maxi single - in addition to artist names and song titles - all four artists (from left to right: Zedd, Steinfeld and Gray) can be seen standing in front of a black background.
Publication and promotion
The first release of Starving took place as a single download on July 22nd, 2016. On October 29th, 2016 the release of a piano version followed and on November 11th, 2016 the acoustic version of the song. Both pieces were also released as individual downloads. Half a year after the first release, Starving (Remixes) followed on February 3rd, 2017. This digital maxi-single contains four remix versions by Bali Bandits, KIIDA and Killagraham. Starving appeared on Steinfeld's EP Haiz , but only on the special edition released in Japan.
To promote the song that followed, among others, live performances for prime time on NBC's Late Night with Seth Meyers and in the Today Show in the United States. Furthermore, international live appearances followed, such as with Swedish Idol .

background information
Steinfeld and Zedd were friends before they collaborated. Compared to Entertainment Weekly , she herself described the process of working together with the following words: “Zedd and I have been friends for a while and we wanted to make music together. He called me and told me he was just finished with a track that I should listen to. I stormed into the studio and fell in love with the song. We knew it was special because it happened so quickly and with such ease. It was fun and really great to work so closely with friends who are so incredibly talented. "

In an interview with Irina Grechko from Nylon-Magazin, Steinfeld himself described the content of the song in the following words:
" Starving is a song about sort of knowing someone, or getting to know that certain someone, to (the point) where even though you were somebody before that person came along, they have given you this whole new outlook on yourself and on life. It's this idea that since you came into my life everything is different, and I didn't know that it could be this different since you came into my life. "
Music video
The music video for Starving premiered on September 27, 2016 on YouTube . You can see Steinfeld, who sings the song at various locations and dances to it, sometimes accompanied by men. The two Gray members have a brief cameo , while Zedd does not appear in the video. The total length of the video is 3:04 minutes. Directed by Darren Craig, the video was produced by Nathan Scherrer. To date, the music video has over 137 million views on YouTube (as of February 2017).

Katherine Barner of the English-language music website Idolator described the song as "a dreamy youth romance anthem".
Isis Briones of Teen Vogue said the following about the song: “ Starving starts with soft guitar sounds and builds up to a soft dance melody, perfect for a serene summer night with friends. Thanks to the catchy lyrics and Zedd's smooth transitions, the words will be instantly memorized after just a few repetitions. Charts and chart placements
Starving reached position 47 in the single charts in Germany and stayed in the charts for a total of 22 weeks. In Austria the single reached position 31 in 22 chart weeks and in Switzerland position 45 in 24 chart weeks. In the UK, the single reached position five and stayed in the top 10 for six weeks and in the charts for 36 weeks. In the United States, the single reached position twelve on the Billboard Hot 100 in 29 chart weeks . In 2016 Starving placed 57th in the UK singles annual charts and 94th in the United States. In 2017, the single was ranked 82nd on the annual singles chart in the United States.
For Steinfeld as an interpreter, it is her second chart success in Switzerland and the United States after Love Myself , as well as her first chart success in Germany, Austria and the United Kingdom. For Gray as an interpreter and music producer, it is the first chart success worldwide.
For Zedd as an interpreter this is already the seventh chart success in the United States, as well as the sixth in Germany and the United Kingdom, the fifth in Austria and the fourth in Switzerland. It is his second top 10 success in the UK charts after Stay the Night . Awards for music sales
In February 2018, Starving was awarded triple platinum for over three million units sold in the United States. Platinum awards followed in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Sweden and the United Kingdom, as well as other gold awards. In total, the single was certified three times with gold and 16 times with platinum for over 5.2 million units sold.
For Steinfeld it is the second platinum award after Love Myself in the United States, worldwide it is for her and for Gray the first single to be awarded gold and platinum. For Zedd, this is the fifth single to reach at least platinum status in the United States. In the United Kingdom, Starving replaced Zedd with the award of the platinum record Break Free (gold award) as the most successful single release.
