The Große Stechlinsee belongs to the Rheinsberg lake area in the natural area of the Neustrelitz Kleinseenland . It is located in the municipality of Stechlin in the Oberhavel district . The west bank belongs to the area of the city of Rheinsberg in the Ostprignitz-Ruppin district . The village of Neuglobsow is on the east bank . The origin of the Großer Stechlinsee is interpreted with the burial and the subsequent accumulation of a block of dead ice in an extensive sand area . The discharge takes place via the Polzow Canal to the Nehmitzsee . While the water level is at a height of 59.6  m above sea level. NHN , the deepest point of the lake is about ten meters below sea level.

history

The name Stechlin is said to be derived from steklo , the Slavic word for glass. Theodor Fontane gave his last novel the title Der Stechlin . It describes the fate of a fictional noble family von Stechlin , who reside on the Großer Stechlinsee. The novel was published in 1897/1898 and was made into a film in 1975 .

Between 1960 and 1966, the Rheinsberg nuclear power plant was built between Nehmitzsee and Großem Stechlinsee as a research and experimental power plant for the German Democratic Republic . It was used to generate electricity from 1966 until it was closed in 1990. The cooling water was taken from the Nehmitzsee and after it was heated it was channeled into the Großer Stechlinsee via a channel built especially for this purpose. From there the water flowed back over the Polzow Canal into the Nehmitzsee. The warming of the lake water had consequences for the flora and fauna of the two lakes.

The Great Stechlinsee has been scientifically observed since the 1950s at the latest. A branch of the Leibniz Institute for Freshwater Ecology and Inland Fisheries examines, among other things, the creatures of the lake for long-term changes. There is also a measuring station for the Federal Environment Agency and a meteorological station for the German Weather Service .

The Große Stechlinsee is managed by the Stechlinsee fishery of the Böttcher & Sohn family in the sixth generation. The shallow beaches and clear water make it a popular swimming lake and an excellent diving spot .

ecology

The Great Stechlinsee is now the only large oligotrophic lake in northern Germany. The depth of view is up to 11 meters and an average of 6 meters. The Stechlin whitefish is a species of fish that only occurs in the Stechlinsee . In addition, pike , perch , tench , bream , roach , rudd , carp , grass carp and eel are common in the lake . As part of the Stechlin nature reserve , the lake is part of the Stechlin-Ruppiner Land nature park . In 2012 it was named Living Lake of the Year by the Global Nature Fund .
