Stephen Michael Baxter (* 13. November 1957 in Liverpool ) is an English science fiction - author , best known for his Xeelee cycle.

Life

Baxter studied mathematics at Cambridge , holds a PhD in engineering from Southampton University and a degree in business administration from Henley Management College . For several years he taught mathematics, physics and computer science . Baxter is a member of the British Interplanetary Society and applied as an astronaut in 1991 to be a guest on the Russian Mir space station .

In 1987 the first short story of Baxter's Xeelee cycle appeared in SF magazine Interzone . Since then he has published over 40 books and over 100 short stories. He has been a freelance writer since 1995.

Baxter lives in Northumberland.

Awards

Baxter has won many prizes, including the Philip K. Dick Award , the John W. Campbell Memorial Award , the British Science Fiction Association Award , the German Kurd-Laßwitz Award, and the Seiun Award (Japan). In detail:

Baxter's style as a hard SF writer is considered unique. In each of his novels he asks a question and then derives answers from the current state of knowledge of physical laws and theories.

The Xeelee Universe

The Xeelee Sequence

His "Xeelee" cycle takes place in the distant future. Humans are developing into the second most powerful species in the universe alongside the god-like Xeelee (pronounced Sielie). The novels and short stories deal with aspects of modern physics, with singularities and the conflicts between baryonic and supersymmetric life. Especially in Flux you can find a literary description of life on a neutron star .

Destiny's Children

The novel takes place in two time levels. In one, about 500,000 years away from our present, a powerful entity emerges, the transcendence, from a special telepathic connection of many people, at the center of which are the immortals. In the course of time, transcendence has achieved almost divine power over space and time and has committed itself to the redemption of all humanity in all times by living through every life itself and ultimately changing or correcting events. During this time, a young woman lives in a generation ship who is to be included in the transcendence.
The other storyline is in our near future, the 2040s . Global warming has meanwhile created massive problems, Miami is sinking into the floods, as is England and other regions. There are no more cars and it is hardly possible to travel by plane, so greenhouse gas emissions have been greatly reduced. Almost all large mammals are extinct, and the Kuiper Anomaly has been in the solar system, still unexplored, for decades. This is the time of Michael Poole, an engineer who lost his wife many years ago, but who has appeared to him as a kind of ghost since early childhood. Between problems with his son and these confusing phenomena, he leads a project that is supposed to save human civilization from destruction: the stabilization of methane hydrate deposits in the polar region.
In addition to moral and scientific aspects of climate change and the associated extinction, Baxter also deals with the religious wish and the possibility of divinity and redemption.

The nameless first-person narrator (the time traveler) returns from his first trip from the future of the Morlocks and Elois to Victorian England and sets off again into the future. However, this has fundamentally changed. In this novel, Baxter plays with the many-worlds interpretation of quantum mechanics and was awarded the BSFA Award in 1995 and the John W. Campbell Memorial Award for Best Science Fiction Novel and the Philip K. Dick Award in 1996.
