The Xeelee Universe

The Xeelee Sequence

His "Xeelee" cycle takes place in the distant future. Humans are developing into the second most powerful species in the universe alongside the god-like Xeelee (pronounced Sielie). The novels and short stories deal with aspects of modern physics, with singularities and the conflicts between baryonic and supersymmetric life. Especially in Flux you can find a literary description of life on a neutron star .

  • Vol. 1: Raft , 1991.
Volume 1: Das Floß , Heyne TB, 1994, ISBN 3-453-07777-6 .
What happens if people by chance land in a universe in which the gravitational constant is a billion times larger than in our universe and the human body already develops a noticeable mass attraction? This novel describes how people cope with these new conditions and build a new civilization.
  • Vol. 2: Timelike Infinity , 1992.
Volume 2: The Mesh of Infinity , Heyne, 1994, ISBN 3-453-07958-2 .
This novel describes how extraterrestrial invaders travel 1500 years into the past through man-made wormholes in order to suppress humanity there too, and how the protagonist defends himself against an invasion that actually takes place in the future, and thereby insights wins in a future he would rather never have seen.
  • Vol. 3: Flux , 1993.
Volume 3: Flux , Heyne, 1998, ISBN 3-453-13967-4 .
Can there be life on a neutron star on which gravity is billions of times stronger than on earth? Here, too, Stephen Baxter pursues unconventional ideas and describes a human civilization created by human hands and how the human spirit can assert itself in super-dense matter.
  • Vol. 4: Ring , 1994.
Volume 4: Ring , Heyne, 1996, ISBN 3-453-09458-1 .
(In Germany, volumes 3 + 4 were published in reversed order.)
What if life as we know it is only a temporary solution and the true aliens are so alien that there can never be even a single approach to communication? In the actual conclusion of the "Xeelee" cycle, the author touches on the old philosophical problem of intercommunicability between beings who are based on different horizons of experience (cf. Solaris by Stanisław Lem ), and what position a person takes when two godlike adversaries are at war. Above all, this novel raises the question of the framework in which human and universal events occur.
  • Vol. 5: Vacuum Diagrams , 1997 (short stories)
Volume 5: Vacuum diagrams , Heyne, 2001, ISBN 3-453-17983-8 .

Destiny's Children

His cycle on the "Children of Fate" fits into the "Xeelee" cycle. These novels describe how various circumstances result in parallel developments in human society and how subspecies of the human species can arise.

  • Vol. 1: Coalescent , 2003.
Volume 1: Der Orden , Heyne, 2004, ISBN 3-453-52012-2 .
Is our current form of society the only one possible, or can there also be other forms of human beings? A young girl in England gets caught up in the turmoil of post-Roman times in the 5th century AD. She finds her way to survive during this time, but how can her family and with it her descendants survive? She finds a way, and in the 20th century a distant descendant discovers a clue to an unimaginable, even inhuman organization and follows up on this clue. In his novel, Stephen Baxter manages to describe a form of human society that is built up and functions like an anthill. He puts forward the thesis that every form of non-hierarchical communities are in principle swarms and different swarms, also in other ways, war. These so-called coalescences are described in many of his books.
  • Vol. 2: Exultant , 2004.
Volume 2: Sternenkinder , Heyne, 2005, ISBN 3-453-52101-3 .
Can humanity survive if it has been at war for 20,000 years and only lives for war? And is our form of life the only possible one? The novel tells the story of a young pilot and his older counterpart from another time period. Both have to assert themselves in different situations against the frozen worldview of the coalition and finally work together to save humanity from the Xeelee. A key message of the novel is that humanity can only survive if it constantly adapts and breaks new ground. Baxter describes the consequences and effects of a war that is waged at faster than light speed and thus inevitably leads to time paradoxes. At the same time, the story of the universe is told in a linear parallel story and how life is formed in every phase of the emerging universe because it was created through life itself. It also explains what the Xeelee are and how they came about.
  • Vol. 3: Transcendent , 2005.
Volume 3: Transzendenz , Heyne, 2006, ISBN 3-453-52189-7 .
The novel takes place in two time levels. In one, about 500,000 years away from our present, a powerful entity emerges, the transcendence, from a special telepathic connection of many people, at the center of which are the immortals. In the course of time, transcendence has achieved almost divine power over space and time and has committed itself to the redemption of all humanity in all times by living through every life itself and ultimately changing or correcting events. During this time, a young woman lives in a generation ship who is to be included in the transcendence.
The other storyline is in our near future, the 2040s . Global warming has meanwhile created massive problems, Miami is sinking into the floods, as is England and other regions. There are no more cars and it is hardly possible to travel by plane, so greenhouse gas emissions have been greatly reduced. Almost all large mammals are extinct, and the Kuiper Anomaly has been in the solar system, still unexplored, for decades. This is the time of Michael Poole, an engineer who lost his wife many years ago, but who has appeared to him as a kind of ghost since early childhood. Between problems with his son and these confusing phenomena, he leads a project that is supposed to save human civilization from destruction: the stabilization of methane hydrate deposits in the polar region.
In addition to moral and scientific aspects of climate change and the associated extinction, Baxter also deals with the religious wish and the possibility of divinity and redemption.

The time conspiracy 01: Imperator , Heyne, 2007, ISBN 978-3-453-52247-3 .
When a brigand is born, the mother falls into a trance, utters a prophecy in Latin and dies. This prophecy details the invasion of Britain, the arrival of an emperor, and the construction of Hadrian's Wall. Why this prophecy at a time when Latin was still almost unknown in Britain? Does anyone want to change the way things are? In this novel the story of a family is told who wants to use the prophecy for their own purposes and thus incurs misfortune; also the invasion of Britain and the slow expansion of Christianity in Europe and Britain.
  • Vol. 2: Conqueror , 2007.
The Time Conspiracy 02: Eroberer , Heyne, 2007, ISBN 978-3-453-52300-5 .
It's 600 AD in Britain. When her child is born, a Roman woman in a trance recites a Germanic poem, a language she cannot speak, in a rhyme scheme that she cannot know. The poem is about the Teutons and the Northmen and how they will influence the fate of Britain. The last verse promises a 10,000 year Aryan empire.
It is also briefly hinted at that prophecies are not the only way to manipulate the past: a silent foundling is mentioned who draws the blueprints of incredible machines.
The poem also contains a hint as to who might have written it ...
  • Vol. 3: Navigator , 2007.
The time conspiracy 03: Navigator , Heyne, 2008, ISBN 978-3-453-52371-5 .
Strange prophecies and messengers keep popping up that intervene at turning points in history. The English monk Sithric collects these prophecies and comes across two who want to create opposing futures. After his death, the prophecies are separated and fall into the hands of two related families. Each believes that their prophecy will save Christianity, and so both fight each other through intrigues. Will “the pigeon” use “God's machines” in the last war against Islam? Or will he cross the great sea in the west to discover new lands there?
It is becoming increasingly clear that competing weavers , Witnesses, and goblins from the future are tampering with the past to gain an advantage.
  • Vol. 4: Weaver , 2008.
The time conspiracy 04: Dictator , Heyne, 2008, ISBN 978-3-453-52426-2 .
It is September 1940 and the Seelöwe company begins. German troops land on the English coast and advance north. But the invasion comes to an early halt and England is suddenly divided: into a free English side and into the protectorate of Albion held by the German invaders . In this, the population suffers greatly from the occupation. German soldiers are quartered with local families, prisoners of war have to do forced labor and the supply situation is deteriorating more and more. In the midst of this occupation, the time conspiracy described in the three previous novels begins and a race between the British secret service and the SS begins: some want to eliminate the weaver , others change the history of the entire world with ever new interventions in the past.

Volume 1: Die Zeit-Odyssey , Heyne, 2005, ISBN 3-453-52410-1 .
In 2037 the space-time continuum breaks apart. The earth is being put back together again by many pieces of "earth time", like a patchwork quilt, and suddenly people from the year 2037 find themselves in a world in which prehistoric people and ice ages exist. In addition, the “eyes” appear everywhere: silver spheres that float motionless in the area. After all, two armies collide, which should never come together: Alexander the Great will have to compete with Genghis Khan.
  • Vol. 2: Sunstorm , 2005.
Volume 2: Sonnensturm , Heyne, 2006, ISBN 3-453-52125-0 .
A solar observation station on the moon observes irregularities in the sun, and it turns out that within a short time a gigantic solar flare threatens to burn up all life on earth. Did the firstborn cause this eruption and why? And how can humanity protect itself against the elemental forces of its own mother star? This novel follows on from the previous one and describes an attack on humanity that has been in preparation for eons and how humanity asserts itself and defends itself.
  • Vol. 3: Firstborn , 2008.
Volume 3: Wächter , Heyne, 2009, ISBN 978-3-453-52496-5 .
About 30 years after humans barely survived the solar storm, the solar system has changed. The environmental conditions changed by the storm turn previously hostile moons and planets into interesting objects for colonization or exploration. But the firstborn interfere again. The annihilation of humanity is still a done deal.

How would the Crimean War have ended if the British had had an antimatter weapon? Baxter describes the use of weapons, the destructive power of which is beyond anything known. The question that arises here is how people deal with technologies that they barely understand but use.
Zeitschiffe , Heyne, 1995, ISBN 3-453-08555-8 .
Zeitschiffe , Heyne, 2002, ISBN 3-453-21091-3 .
The time traveler has returned to his own time. Would he travel to the future again, would he find the exact world he left? Here Stephen Baxter has come up with a lot to illustrate the implications of the many-worlds interpretation . The time traveler ends up in a Dyson sphere on his second journey and first has to find his way around the gigantic dimensions. The novel sees itself as a continuation of the book The Time Machine by HG Wells . The nameless first-person narrator (the time traveler) returns from his first trip from the future of the Morlocks and Elois to Victorian England and sets off again into the future. However, this has fundamentally changed. In this novel, Baxter plays with the many-worlds interpretation of quantum mechanics and was awarded the BSFA Award in 1995 and the John W. Campbell Memorial Award for Best Science Fiction Novel and the Philip K. Dick Award in 1996.
The light remote days , Heyne, 2001, ISBN 3-453-17803-3 .
In the middle of the 21st century, the entrepreneur Hiram Patterson succeeds in systematically stabilizing wormholes and using them to transmit information. With the help of this technology, he develops a camera that can virtually see through walls and thus sets a social change in motion, the consequences of which he hardly suspects. But that's not all: he soon realizes that his camera can make visible not only any location in the present, but also in the past. Humanity begins to explore its own history and has to say goodbye to many a self-deception.

How did man come into being, and will there be other species after man that have evolved from him? The author pursues this question in this novel by not placing humans apart from evolution , but integrating them. So the present man will only be a basis for future hominids .
