Steven Roy Caulker (born December 29, 1991 in Feltham , London ) is an English football player . Trained in the youth department of Tottenham Hotspur , the center- back was on loan from various clubs from 2009 to 2012, making his Premier League debut for Swansea City at the beginning of the 2011/12 season .

Career

Tottenham Hotspur and rental locations

Caulker, who attended Lampton School in his district, played for the local club Hounslow Borough in his youth , but was also a talented athlete who became district champion over the 400 meter sprint distance four years in a row. Due to the influence of his coach at the time, he decided to push his football career. It was also he who summoned Caulker from central midfield to central defense at the age of 15. After just one game in this position, Caulker received contract offers for their respective youth academies from several clubs, including Chelsea FC , Queens Park Rangers and Tottenham Hotspur . The central defender opted for the Spurs and was already used in the club's U-18s as a 16-year-old. In the 2008/09 season he was the team's regular with 31 missions and led it as captain. At the same time he came to first appearances in the second team, the Tottenham Reserves . Following this season he signed his first professional contract with Spurs.

In order to allow the young defender match practice, he was then awarded directly to the third division club Yeovil Town . The loan contract, originally set for three months, was extended in November 2009 to the end of the season. Caulker convinced at Yeovil from the start and missed only one of 45 league games due to the U-19 European Championship . At the end of the loan period, he received four of five club-internal seasonal awards. After returning from the European Championship, Caulker signed a new contract with Spurs and made his professional debut on September 21, 2010 in a 4-1 defeat in the League Cup against Arsenal .

Just five days later, a loan deal with Bristol City followed until the end of the season. In Bristol he was also able to establish himself as a regular player and was named Football League Young Player of the Month in November of the same year . After 29 appearances with two goals scored Caulker fell out in March 2011 due to a cartilage damage in the knee for the rest of the season. The defender was praised for his performance in Bristol. Premier League record player David James called Caulker one of our best . He also won Bristol City's Young Player of the Year Award and was nominated for Player of the Year .

In the summer of 2011 Caulker underwent an ankle surgery that had been planned for some time. In July it was awarded again; the Premier League promoted Swansea City signed him until the end of the season. Caulker made his Premier League debut against Manchester City (0-4) on matchday one and was also used in the other first four games. In the match against Arsenal, however, Caulker hit the post violently while trying to save the ball on the line and suffered a cartilage damage in his knee that put him out of action for two months. In the further course of the season it brought Caulker to the regular player and had a share in the stay of the promoted in the top division.

In the summer of 2012, the defender signed a contract with Spurs until 2016 . In the first season he spent with the first team, Caulker came straight to first inserts; in the Europa League against Lazio Rome and in the Premier League against the Queens Park Rangers . He scored his first goal for the club in a 2-0 home win over Aston Villa .

Cardiff City

On July 31, 2013, Cardiff City announced the signing of Caulkers. He signed a four-year contract until June 30, 2017 and was the club's record signing from the Welsh capital with a transfer fee of nine million pounds.

Further career since 2014

After a short absence from a club, Caulker signed a 1.5-year contract with the Scottish first division club on February 8, 2018. On the last day of the summer transfer window, he terminated his contract on August 31, 2018.

In January 2019 he joined the Turkish first division club Alanyaspor .

National team

Since his grandmother comes from Scotland , Caulker is eligible to play for both national teams, so that he has the option of choosing until his debut in a competitive match for the senior national team.

For England's U-19 national team , Caulker played the qualifying matches and the 2010 U-19 European Championship in France itself. England came second in the group stage, but failed in the semi-finals to Spain . Caulker was no longer nominated for the U-19 due to his age.

He made his debut for the U-21s in a friendly against Germany . Further appearances in friendly matches followed before the knee injury in March 2011 prevented participation in the U-21 European Championship in Denmark. In qualifying for the EM 2013 in Israel, Caulker scored his first goal on an international level in a 4-0 win against Belgium .

In July 2012, Stuart Pearce announced that Caulker was on the squad for the Summer Olympics in London . At the Olympics, he was used in all five games before you failed in the quarter-finals on penalties to South Korea . Following the Olympic Games, Caulker was nominated for the first time for the senior national team in August 2012 , but was not used in the game against Italy , so coach Fabio Capello's goal to tie Caulker to the English team failed for the time being.

Caulker made his debut for the Three Lions in November 2012 against Sweden . In the opening game of the new Friends Arena in Stockholm he scored a goal in the 4-2 defeat against the home side.
