Coordinates: 65 ° 6 '  N , 17 ° 7'  O Storuman is a municipality ( Swedish kommun ) in the Swedish province Västerbottens Lan and the historical province Lapland . The main town of the municipality is Storuman .

The European roads 12 and 45 ( Inlandsvägen ), which intersect at the main town of Storuman, as well as the inland railway and the Hällnäs – Storuman railway, run through the municipality . In Gunnarn also located Storuman airport .

geography

The municipality extends about 240 kilometers along the Umeälven from the Norwegian border to the southeast. Half of the community area is taken up by the high mountains, in which the Norra Sydertoppen is the highest mountain at 1,768 m. The northernmost parts of the mountains belong to the Vindelfjällen nature reserve , the elevation of which is being discussed as a national park.

Numerous long, narrow mountain lakes form the headwaters of the Umeälven, which extends further south to Lake Storuman . The main town of the municipality is located at its southern tip.

economy

Forestry and the wood processing industry are the traditional industries. Tourism has grown in importance in the last few decades. The Northland company is exploring a gold deposit in Barsele .

Attractions

Tärnaby , 125 kilometers northwest of Storuman on the E 12, is one of Sweden's major winter sports centers , together with the nearby town of Hemavan . In Tärnaby there is a seed museum and a ski museum, in Hemavan there is a botanical garden with mountain plants and an exhibition on the geology, flora, fauna and the cultural and historical significance of the mountains.
The Kungsleden , a long-distance hiking trail that begins in Abisko , ends in Hemavan .
