Neighboring communities

The municipality of Sulz shares a municipal boundary with three other Vorarlberg municipalities that, like Sulz, are in the Feldkirch district. In the north, Sulz borders the municipality of Röthis , in the east on the municipality of Zwischenwasser and in the south and west on the market town of Rankweil .

history

In the Rhaetian list of goods (around 850) the place with the name "Sulles" is first mentioned in a document. On the Jergenberg hill, the location of today's parish church, there was already a chapel in the Middle Ages, which at that time belonged to the Rankweil mother parish. Sulz was raised to an independent parish in 1843. At that time Sulz had about 630 inhabitants. Today's parish church, which is consecrated to St. George, was built in the years 1903–1904 under Pastor Anton Dönz.

Through the establishment of the Rankweil-Sulz double court, Sulz was the place of jurisdiction until 1784. The place of jurisdiction was the hill Müsinen, today's Sulnerberg.

For a long time Sulz was a large municipality, which until its gradual dissolution between the 16th and 18th centuries also included the municipalities of Zwischenwasser, Röthis, Weiler, Klaus, Viktorsberg and Fraxern.

From 1637 to 1748 Sulz was also an important residence of Jewish families in Vorarlberg. In 1748 there were riots that led to the expulsion of the Jews from Sulz.

In the 16th century the noble residences of Jergenberg and Sulzhofen were established as branches of Feldkirch patrician families. The Jergenberg mansion now serves as a vicarage. The Sulzhofen mansion, which last housed the municipal office, was demolished in 1975.

After centuries of extremely cautious settlement development, the municipality was hit by a very large population and settlement growth with the economic upswing after the Second World War . Between 1951 and 1981 the population doubled, the expansion of the building area nearly tripled.

During the construction work for the new children's campus on the Jergenberg near the parish church, around 200 historical graves were discovered in July 2018, the age of which is estimated to be around 1000 years.

Population development

The proportion of foreigners at the end of 2002 was 13.3%.

coat of arms

Sulz

The municipal coat of arms was created in 1968 based on a design by the Schruns artist and heraldist Konrad Honold .
On a green coat of arms, it shows a silver count as a judge, who holds a judge's baton in his hand and sits on an armchair in court. The design of the coat of arms reminds that Sulz was once a place of court. The green background means that the court was held “in the field”, that is, in the open air.
