The synagogue in Sélestat , a French town in the Bas-Rhin department in the historic Alsace region , was built in 1890. The synagogue is on Rue Sainte-Barbe.

history

The synagogue was built in 1890 according to the plans of the architect Alexander Stamm in neo-Romanesque style. Buildings of the Jewish community had already stood in the same place. The ritual bath ( mikveh ) built around 1836 was integrated into the new building in 1890.

During the German occupation in World War II , the synagogue was devastated and looted. From 1950 to 1960 it was rebuilt without its original dome .

Above the portal is the inscription: This is the gate to the Lord; the righteous will pass through it ( Psalm 118 : 20).
