The magenta Telekom GmbH (also: Magenta , Magenta T until the spring of 2019 T-Mobile Austria ) is an Austrian telecommunications company and a wholly owned subsidiary of Deutsche Telekom AG . Founded as max.mobil. After the takeover by Deutsche Telekom in 2000, the company was finally renamed T-Mobile Austria on April 18, 2002 . With the merger of UPC Austria in 2019, it became today's Magenta Telekom.

In terms of customer numbers, Magenta Telekom is one of the largest mobile communications providers in Austria and sells GSM , EDGE , UMTS and HSDPA as well as LTE and WLAN services.

history

After the Ö-Call consortium had acquired the first private mobile radio license for Austria on January 25, 1996, the mobile network with the slogan “max.mobil. - a network takes off “online. Until then, the subsidiary of the state post and Telekom Austria (today A1 Telekom Austria) held the mobile phone monopoly in the GSM area.

In April 2000, Deutsche Telekom took over 100% of max.mobil. On April 18, 2002, max.mobil was renamed “T-Mobile Austria”.

Takeover of tele.ring

Before it was taken over by T-Mobile, tele.ring was a subsidiary of Western Wireless. tele.ring was bought in 2005 after Alltel, the new owner of Western Wireless , decided to sell all of Western Wireless' international subsidiaries. T-Mobile bought tele.ring for around 1.3 billion euros after the purchase was approved by the EU antitrust authority and the Austrian telecommunications regulatory authority subject to certain conditions. Conditions were, for example, the assignment of numerous tele.ring broadcasting stations to the competitors Orange and Hutchison Drei Austria and the sale of the tele.ring UMTS frequencies also to Orange and Drei. The brand name tele.ring was retained as a discount brand until 2020. Tele.ring prepaid cards were called “Willi” and “Mücke”.

To further expand the Austrian subsidiary T-Mobile Austria, Deutsche Telekom AG and Liberty Global plc. on December 21, 2017 that T-Mobile would like to take over the Liberty subsidiary UPC Austria for 1.9 billion euros. With the takeover, Deutsche Telekom is transferring its strategy, which has already been implemented in Germany and the Netherlands, of offering customers mobile communications, landline networks and the Internet. The takeover also gives T-Mobile Austria access to the fiber optic network in order to also offer television, broadband and Voice-over-IP. The purchase price also includes the right to use the UPC brand for a period of three years until full integration into the Deutsche Telekom Group is complete. Both parties expected approval by the European Commission in the second half of 2018. On August 1, 2018, UPC was taken over by T-Mobile.

As a result of the takeover and merger of UPC Austria, products and services have been sold under the newly created brands "Magenta" and T since May 7, 2019 ; the old brands were no longer applicable.

The network of Magenta Telekom achieved according to information provided 98.5% of Austrian households with 2G (voice telephony) and 94 percent of the population with 3G (data). The LTE network reached 97% of the Austrian population at the end of 2016. Magenta uses technology from Huawei for its own network .

Innovations

In 2008, T-Mobile was the first mobile operator in Austria to introduce the iPhone , in 2009 the first Android device and in 2012 the first Windows Phone 8 device in Austria. On October 19, 2010, T-Mobile put Austria's first LTE network into operation in Innsbruck . In February 2018, T-Mobile was the first mobile operator worldwide to present the first drone flight over 5G, the successor technology to LTE / 4G. With the conclusion of the 5G frequency auction in early March 2019, Magenta Telekom acquired usage rights to expand the 5G communication standard throughout Austria. On the basis of these frequencies, Magenta Telekom put the first 5G mobile radio stations into operation on March 26, 2019, primarily in rural regions. In 2020, the Magenta cable network will offer gigabit speeds through investments in the DOCSIS 3.1 transmission standard in Vienna, Graz, Klagenfurt, Villach and Wiener Neustadt. There are around 1.2 million households and businesses across Austria in Magenta's gigabit network.

Magenta Telekom (then still T-Mobile Austria) was the main sponsor of the Austrian “ tipp 3-Bundesliga powered by T-Mobile ” from 2003 to 2014 . Before that, the top soccer league in Austria was already called “max.Bundesliga” and “T-Mobile Bundesliga”. In addition, max.mobil sponsored the “max.Supercup” and the “max.Hallencup”. When the company was renamed T-Mobile Austria, the names of the sponsored competitions were also changed. Magenta Telekom has been a sponsor of the ÖFB national team since December 2013 .

In addition to its commitment in the professional sector, Magenta Telekom is also active in the youth sector of the Austrian Bundesliga.
