The T-Mobile Center ( Sprint Center until 2020 ) is a multifunctional arena in the US city of Kansas City in the state of Missouri . The namesake is the cellular operator T-Mobile US , until the merger in 2020 before the former telecommunications provider Sprint Corporation .
history
The then Sprint Center was opened on October 10, 2007 and a concert by Elton John on October 13, 2007 was the first event in the arena. The arena has 18,500 seats and 75 boxes and has replaced the Kemper Arena , which was inaugurated in 1974, as the main event hall. Additionally, the College Basketball Experience, which includes the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame, is connected to the north of the arena. In 2008, that was Big 12 Men's Basketball Tournament at Sprint Center held, as well as both the first two rounds of were NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Championship in 2009 and the regional selections of the Final Four of the NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Championship 2010 held here.
The city is in talks to bring a National Hockey League (NHL) or National Basketball Association (NBA) franchise to the arena in Kansas. So far, the attempts have been unsuccessful.
Details
Construction began on June 24, 2005 and was completed on October 11, 2007. The final design, the Downtown Arena Design Team (a collaboration between Populous Architects (previously HOK Sports), 360 Architecture, Rafael Architects and Ellerbe Becket), was selected in August 2005. The construction manager responsible for the entire project was the Minneapolis- based MA Mortenson Company. The complete outer glass facade, all metal panels for the adjacent buildings and all additional metal cladding were specially designed for the Sprint Center by Overgaard Ltd., Hong Kong. manufactured. A total of approx. 13,000 m² of double insulating glass and 5,000 m² of lacquered aluminum wall panels were installed. All 2,404 glass elements of the main building were manufactured one after the other and completely pre-assembled before transport.

Arena Football League
Early in the 2008 season, the Kansas City Brigade's arena football team announced its move from the Kemper Arena to the Sprint Center. For Arena Football there is space for 17,297 spectators in the arena. The 2009 season has been canceled. In 2011 and 2012 the team returned to the league and the center.
