Day of the Rhenish-Bergish History

The day of the Rheinisch-Bergische Geschichte was an event of the Rheinisch-Bergisches Kreis with the aim of improving the history knowledge and the historical awareness of the population. The motto was: Experience history differently . The events took place in the years 2008–2015 on the last Saturday in April. The venues changed annually, so that after eight years the Rhenish-Bergish History Day was held once in each of the eight towns and communities in the district.

Six cities, two municipalities

2008 Bergisch Gladbach

The first day was held in Bergisch Gladbach in 2008 . Partner of the circle as the organizer was the Bergisches Geschichtsverein Abt. Rhein-Berg. His history bar in the Bensberg district was the starting point for bus tours and guided tours as well as the location for the lectures. Were offered

  • the French tour to places of remembrance of the Bergisch resistance and also to the cemeteries from the time of the Napoleonic wars around 1800
  • a monument tour to selected Gladbach monuments and a tour to four buildings by the architect Gottfried Böhm
  • a mining tour to various sites in the Bensberg ore district under the guidance of Herbert Stahl
  • two walks around the old castle / Bensberg town hall and around the new castle Bensberg
  • a lecture on the stairwells in Schloss Bensberg and a lecture on the current status of genealogical research in Bergisch Gladbach and the surrounding area.

2009 Odenthal

The second day was organized with the participation of the Landscape and History Association in Odenthal . Here the Herzogenhof community center was the meeting point and starting point. In addition to an all-day rally for children, there was a guided tour through historic Odenthal. In addition, the Church of St. Pankratius and the Strauweiler Castle could be visited with an expert guide. The host, Hubertus Prince zu Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg, took over the tour of the castle . A lecture on the modern satellite-based Global Positioning System (GPS) concluded the day.

2010 Burscheid

The third day was held in 2010 in the music city of Burscheid . Accordingly, the program included a concert by the Musicalische Academie in 1812 and by the Hilgen Orchestra Association in 1912 . A city tour with explanations on Platt and a tour of the Protestant church were offered. The bath house and the fire station with an exhibition of historical uniforms and utensils could be visited. A hike led to the Eifgenburg and a walk on an easier path. A lecture dealt with Pastor Johannes Löh , after whom a street in Burscheid is named. The Lambertsmühle located outside could be explored all day.

2011 Rösrath

The fourth day in 2011 was organized by the history association Rösrath . The local meeting point was the citizens' forum in the Hope Valley district . This is where the various tours began. The first goal was the Evangelical Church Volberg and the surrounding monuments such as the tree courtyard house . The oldest parts of the church date from the 12th century. The evangelical parish of Volberg celebrated its 450th anniversary in 2012. Much younger, from the Second World War, is the Hoffnungsthal bunker . The former Bergsegen mine represents a mining history that goes back to the Middle Ages and reached its peak in the 19th and first half of the 20th century. The villas of the Reusch family testify to the local importance of this family in the 19th and 20th centuries. Around 1890 the Reusch company financed a substantial part of the Cologne – Lindlar railway line . At the end of the day, the future of Haus Venauen was discussed.

2012 Leichlingen

The fifth day in 2012 was organized with the support of the historical round table and the city of Leichlingen . The Villa Weyermann is located near the center of the city , today the Bürgerhaus Am Hammer. The house, built in 1877, is named after a family of entrepreneurs who had significant influence in the city in the second half of the 19th century. The first event there was an introduction to the history of Leichlingen. Eicherhof Palace and its park designed by Joseph Clemens Weyhe were the subject of a guided tour. A second tour dealt with the Protestant church and the surrounding monument area of ​​the village . The current owner gave a lecture about the house "Hermann des Wirths Hauß", which was mentioned in a document at the beginning of the 17th century and is still used today as a restaurant and inn. Outside the center, Haus Vorst , which is privately owned, could be viewed. The bus tour then led to the center of Witzhelden with the Evangelical Church of Alter vom Berge .

2013 Kürten

The sixth day in 2013 was organized by the history association for the municipality of Kürten and the surrounding area with a focus on the district of Dürscheid .

A lecture on the history of Dürscheid was given in the parish hall of the Catholic parish of St. Nikolaus . The parish hall was also the starting point for bus tours and hikes. A hike led to the traces of mining around Dürscheid . A bus trip to Sürth followed by a hike to the Burgheim ring wall was also an opportunity to visit the community archive. Another hike led to the former ramparts in the Schanze district . The “Kürten Chapel Wreath” was presented on a bus tour with seven churches and chapels in the six districts of Spitze , Schanze, Weiden , Biesenbach , Olpe and Biesfeld .

2014 Overath

The seventh day presented history in Overath . In 2014, the city celebrates the 950th anniversary of its first mention as "Achera" in a document from the Archbishop of Cologne, Anno II.

In terms of culture and traffic, the “Kulturbahnhof” is the center of the city. A lecture in the hall of the cultural center presented the historical and current importance of the railway into Bergisches . From the train station, walking past historical footfalls , to the pilgrimage church of St. Mary's Visitation in Marialinden. After a tour of the Catholic Church of St. Walburga in Overather, a bus trip to St. Lucia in Immekeppel and St. Mary's Visitation began. Another bus trip led to Steinenbrück , which was followed by a hike on the Lüderich with information about historical ore mining .

2015 Wermelskirchen

The eighth day was organized by the Bergisches Geschichtsverein in Wermelskirchen . The first event was a hike through the Dhünn valley . It was a reminder of the people whose homeland was flooded in the second half of the 20th century when the Great Dhünntalsperre was built. After the official welcome by District Administrator Hermann-Josef Tebroke and the board of directors of the history association, Kino Filmsck showed a documentary about the air raid on Hünger on November 4, 1944. A multivision about Wermelskirchen around 1870 was also shown in the cinema . It showed pictures from the estate of Rudolf Schumacher, the first photographer in town. A guided tour entitled From Gallows Square to the Cloth Factory gave an insight into a longer period of the city's history.

Others

Another annual event of the circle on historical topics was the Heimat expedition .
