The Heimat Expedition is an event of the Rheinisch-Bergisches Kreis , which up to now took place on every second Sunday in September from 2008 to 2015. Each expedition consisted of eight constant topics that were assigned to one of the eight towns and cities in the district. There were also hikes for everyone, an extra tour for experienced hikers and expeditions for children.

As a follow-up action, Expedition Heimat 2.0 was initiated from 2017 (see below).

In addition to the district's cultural office as a planning and coordination office, numerous authorities, associations, parishes and private individuals were involved. These included the city and community administrations of Bergisch Gladbach , Burscheid , Kürten , Leichlingen , Odenthal , Overath , Rösrath and Wermelskirchen , the Sauerland Mountain Association , the Bergisches Geschichtsverein , the Landesbetrieb Wald und Holz NRW and the Rheinisch-Bergische Naturschutzverein. The welcome and opening speeches were usually given by the mayors.

At the same time, this second Sunday in September is the Europe-wide Open Monument Day .

Another annual event on historical topics was the day of the Rheinisch-Bergische Geschichte .

Expedition 2008

Lambertsmühle
  • Sources, brooks, watercourses in Burscheid
The focus was on the Lambertsmühle in the Wiembachtal . The buildings from the 18th century have been a listed building since 1983. The mill operation was stopped in 1956. Today there is a local museum there. The program items in the music city of Burscheid included the concerts of a tuba quartet and a brass band. The children could build nest boxes for birds.

The area around Gut Eichthal was the focus of guided tours and an exhibition. A video by the artist Viola Kramer dealt with the art project Wren - Temporary Gardens . The music school Rösrath-Overath played pieces of music with the theme of garden sounds .

The expedition focused on the former factory halls of the Reusch company, as well as the villas and gardens of the Reusch family of manufacturers in Hopesthal.

On this day the Protestant church in Dhünn , which is normally closed outside of the service times, could be visited. The oldest parts of the building date from the 12th century. The late baroque nave was built in 1769–1772. During the guided tours, the ongoing renovation measures on the tower and west side were explained. The church was the destination of a hike that began at the bus station in Wermelskirchen. There was an organ devotion for music lovers.

Here the house Hülstrung 49, the oldest half-timbered house in the Rheinisch-Bergisch district, could be visited. For the restoration of this house, which was built at the beginning of the 16th century, the owners received the Rhenish Monument Prize in 2006 . This house and other half-timbered houses were the subject of a guided monument hike. The visitors could visit an exhibition of Rhenish pottery and the children could practice pottery. The SPILLYK (a modernized version of the word Spillück, meaning minstrels) played Bergische bagpipe music.

Not the famous Altenberg Cathedral was the subject of the tours, but the hydraulic engineering of the Cistercian monks and the infrastructure of the monastery around the church. A lecture based on the Sartor engraving from 1707 also dealt with the monastery landscape. The hike led to Berge Castle , the cradle of the Bergisches Land.
  • Coral, lime & buddies in Bergisch Gladbach
The lime industry was a very important branch of the city's economy for a long time. The two lime kilns of the Cox company, today located in the middle of the city, are the last of the original eighty kilns. They were built in 1852, used until 1935 and restored until 2007. They are under monument protection. The migration led to the geological foundations of the lime industry, the coral reefs from the Devonian about 360 million years ago. The children were also invited to this expedition to the former lime pits with hammers and magnifying glasses.

Two hikes to the St. Jakobus Chapel in Kürten-Spitze were offered under the title Jakobswege . There was music like on the pilgrimage routes in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance and a lecture on the way to the house of the apostle . There was a rally for pilgrims' children with a reward.

Expedition 2009

  • Springs, brooks, watercourses in Odenthal
The Meute mill in the Scherfbachtal was the example of the use of water power. It was in operation until 1965 and is the only one of five mills on the Scherf with a ditch, pond and grinder to be largely preserved. A collection of functional mill models could be viewed in the center of Odenthal. At both “mill locations” the children could playfully get to know the power of water and direct it themselves.

The gardens of Schloss Bensberg were the subject of guided tours, a lecture and a photo exhibition. The park was not created when the palace was built between 1703 and 1711 and the current structure is therefore modeled on a baroque garden. The children who were able to design their own garden models were also taught which elements were typical for a baroque garden.

Much simpler than Schloss Bensberg, but the houses in Eich 6 to 8 also date from the 18th century . With guided tours on the building history and explanations about the residents, these houses were open to the public as a “museum for a day”.

In the middle of the historically grown town center of Witzhelden is the Protestant church. With its massive late Romanesque tower, it was the destination of several guided tours through the town center. Various models of the previous buildings and archaeological finds could be viewed. A flute group, a children's choir, a singing group, the church band and an organist gave concerts. Stories were told in Bergisch Platt and a Bergisch coffee table was offered.

The participants of the Heimat expedition had a rare opportunity to visit the Thielenmühle . The listed building from 1782 was renovated at this time. The private builders were able to use photos to show the work that had already been done and to explain old craft techniques. A specialist gave information on the subject of monument protection.

Junkermühle is a rural residential area with the remains of a castle. Guided tours by the owners made geology and cultural history clear. Children were able to take part in various nature expeditions and, together with their parents, in carriage rides.

  • Coral, lime & miners in Rösrath
A landmark hidden in the forest for almost two thousand years of mining on Lüderich is the winding tower at Franziska-Schacht. The tower was the meeting point for guided tours of Roman and medieval mining by Herbert Stahl and modern mining by Herbert Ommer .

On the occasion of the famine year 1740, seven statues were donated in 1741, which represent the Passion of Christ. They were set up as footfalls on the old footpath from Overath to Marialinden . Two hikes led from the mountain into the valley via this path, which is rarely used today. Lectures dealt with pilgrimages and pilgrimages, with footfall prayers and other afterlife provisions. At the same time as a guided tour through the pilgrimage church of St. Mary's Visitation and the place, fairy tales were told to the children.

With moated castles in Bergisch Land - a forgotten topic dealt a general lecture with Großbernsau - more than a legendary history , a special lecture. The ruins of Großbernsau Castle could be visited on several tours.

Sometimes it is called the " Melaten von Wermelskirchen", the city cemetery on Berliner Straße. Two tours dealt with the history and preservation of this historic cemetery. A lecture presented the cemetery culture after 1800.

There was an exhibition on the history of Haus Vorst from the holdings of the city archive. In the house itself, the owners led visitors through the rooms on the ground floor and onto the terrace, which allows a wide view of the Wupper valley. In keeping with the romanticism of knights, the children were able to build “Flitzebogen”.

The Catholic Church of St. Margareta in Olpe (Kürten) and the Evangelical Church in Delling were compared in guided tours and lectures . St. Margareta was built around 1900 as an imposing neo-Gothic building. In contrast, there is the simple church in Delling.

The listed turbine system of the former firm Stark und Biedermann consists of weir, upper and lower trench and the turbine with turbine house. The Fontain water turbine from the 1890s was used to generate electricity and used the water from the Sülz for this .

The Steinhaus forester's house is located on the northern edge of the Königsforstes . The living space was mentioned in a document as early as 1403. The building was expanded in the late Baroque style with Cologne ceilings in the 1740s . There were guided tours through the house and in its vicinity. Information about nature was given in lectures on apple trees, bees, the royal forest and its history, and hunting by princes and kings. There were handicraft activities for the children.

There were three locations to choose from:
  • the natural monument Rösberg, where the geological development of 360 million years can be seen
  • the Funkenhof quarry, in the area of ​​which there were trenches during the Second World War
  • Osenau with the Grauwacke , also known as "Bergisches Gold". Here artists exhibited their works and there was bread fresh from the "Backes" (oven).

In keeping with the theme, the focus here was on a street, today's federal highway 51 . A lecture dealt with their history. Harry Böseke , in his role as a Bergischer carter, told of life on the streets in the old days. A journey through time was the trip with the vintage bus. In the 1950s there was an exhibition of vintage commercial vehicles such as tractors, tricycles and trucks.

The extra tour led from the Rösberg natural monument via the Odenthal center to the Funkenhof in Osenau.

Expedition 2011

After the church in Dhünn, the Eich houses and the city cemetery, the idyllic Eifgenbachtal and the use of water power were the focus of a lecture and a hike in 2011 . Bread was baked in the Neuemühle . Günter Blömer exhibited his fully functional mill models. Under the guidance of a museum educator from the Alte Dombach paper museum, the children were able to tinker with water wheels and try them out in the Eifgenbach.
The Bergische Wanderbus between Wermelskirchen and Odenthal was available for hikers .

The park of Schloss Eicherhof is an English landscape garden, which today only covers a third of its original area. It was designed in the second half of the 19th century by the royal court garden director Joseph Clemens Weyhe . Two guided tours dealt with the park, one lecture with the garden architect Weyhe.
In special "lessons" at the Heiligenhoven Castle Forest School, the children were able to learn how to recognize the different trees and how to determine the age of a tree.

The history of Haus Blegge , formerly also called Haus Blech , can be traced back to the 13th century. The baroque complex that exists today was created between 1758 and 1762. Hermann J. Mahlberg attributes the renovations and new buildings to the architect and sculptor Johann Georg Leydel .
A well-known resident of the house was Vincenz von Zuccalmaglio , called Montanus, who lived there with his family from 1835 to 1845.

A Catholic parish only developed in Protestant Hilgen after 1945. In 1953, with great personal commitment, the Catholic Christians built their own Church of Our Lady according to the plans of the architect Dominikus Böhm . Some contemporary witnesses reported on their commitment. An art-historical lecture dealt with the special features of architecture and furnishings.
The goldsmith and artist Hanns Rheindorf created the tabernacle and the stations of the cross out of enamel for this church . Children and adults were able to get to know the production of enamel jewelry in two workshops.

The Flocke textile factory existed in Steinenbrück until 1995 . For at least 600 years the water power of the Sülz was used here, first for mills and in the 20th century for machines. A lecture highlighted this long period of use. The still existing turbine system could be visited.

The Wahner Heide as a farming area, military training area and nature reserve was presented in two guided tours by the biologist Thomas Stumpf. The Stumpf family maintains the goat farm on the edge of the nature reserve with animal husbandry that is appropriate to the landscape and species.
The journalist and local researcher Guido Wagner led through the children's and youth village Stephansheide with the Stephanus chapel , and during the Second World War the prisoner of war camp "Hoffnungsthal" .

A longer hike and a circular route on the Bechen donkey path led to the 360 ​​million year old traces of the Devonian Sea and the traces of mining in the Middle Ages and modern times .

Expedition 2012

Two hikes led into the valley of the Olpe. Numerous mills used the water power of this stream until the 19th or even 20th century. This Kürtener Mühlenweg is one of 24 local forays that have been or will be set up as part of the Bergisches Wanderland . A lecture presented the hard work of the millers.

In the farmer's garden at the Lambertsmühle , numerous types of fruit and vegetables grow that are typical of the Bergisches Land, its soils and its climate. Two guided tours went “into the garden”. In her lecture, the historian Gabriele Emrich brought interested women and men closer to Bergisch cuisine and storage. The garden in the box was a hands-on activity for children who were supposed to take their self-planted box home with them to watch the plants develop.

The Castle Strauweiler for generations owned by the family Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg. As part of the Heimat expedition, there was a rare opportunity to visit the privately used building ensemble. Two lectures dealt with the Bergisch castle landscape and a villa project from around 1900.

Volberger Church with jubilee decorations
The Evangelical Church Community of Volberg-Forsbach-Rösrath celebrated its 450th anniversary in 2012 under the motto “God's grace alone”. The traditional name Volberg stands for today's hope valley . The Evangelical Church in Volberg was the focus of the events with guided tours, lectures and demonstrations on the organ.

Until the 1960s, Wermelskirchen was a center of the German shoe industry for almost a century. An exhibition highlighted the cultural history of shoes . A city tour and a lecture dealt with the evidence of the shoe industry still visible today, such as the Kattwinkel factory . Thematically appropriate fairy tales were told for the children, such as “The shoes that danced through”.

In the city of blossoms , fruit growing was at the center of the Heimat expedition . A hike led along the fruit path . Two lectures explained the peculiarities of fruit cultivation, the care of old fruit varieties, the breeding of new varieties and described the history of the Leichlingen fruit market since 1896.

Ore has been dug repeatedly on the Lüderich since Roman times . After more than a thousand people found employment in the 19th and 20th centuries, the last mine was shut down in 1978. Former Hauer and Steiger led visitors to the former main shaft and the winding tower that was visible from afar. A mass with the former Auxiliary Bishop Klaus Dick from Cologne was held at the Barbarakreuz, which is also a symbol that can be seen from afar .

Expedition 2013

The improvement of water quality has been an important topic worldwide for years. This also plays a role in the tranquil Wipperkotten . During a guided tour in the private museum, visitors were able to find out how the use of water has changed and what life was like in the Kotten in the past. The Kotten are now in the area of ​​the city of Solingen . The Wupper , which drives the water wheel, forms the border to Leichlingen here. The buildings date from the 1860s. The previous buildings were already listed in the lease lists of the Nesselrode family at the beginning of the 17th century . This noble family had their ancestral home in Haus Nesselrath in Leichlinger area.

The house and garden of the artist Mary Bauermeister form a world of their own that was created by the owner and other artists in the past decades through a variety of ideas. The architect Erich Schneider-Wessling planned the house of the co-founder of Fluxus in the 1960s. He took the ideas of Fluxus into account.

Numerous craftsmen demonstrated in the Bergisches Museum for Mining, Crafts and Trades the manufacture of their products according to old fathers' custom . Up until the industrial revolution at the beginning of the 19th century, the Bergisches Land was an economically important region with cloth weavers and yarn bleachers, dyers and ribbon weavers, blade and cutlery manufacturers, leather and paper producers.

The Kleine Heckberg is the highest point in the Rheinisch-Bergisch district. Two tours by Dr. Detlev Arens and Herbert Ommer dealt with the special plants growing there and the traces of mining.

For centuries, the loess clay deposits in and around Burscheid have been used to extract the raw material for field bricks. The last brick factory was closed in 1942. A tour dealt with the traces of clay and ore mining , a lecture in the culture barn with the brick industry in Bergisch using the example of Burscheid .

A tour began in Rausmühle in the Eifgental and “ Through this hollow lane ... ” up to Berliner Straße, a section of Bundesstraße 51 . A multivision to the street was shown in the cinema. This was followed by an inspection from the market to Mozartstrasse. Wermelskirchener Chaussee was completed as early as 1775 and then rebuilt and expanded several times over the centuries.

Expedition 2014

The Sülz has shaped the development of Hoffnungsthal and Rösrath to the present day. It was the source of energy for mills, hammer mills and turbines. Thanks to the generation of electricity from hydropower, Hoffnungsthal was supplied with electricity as early as 1902. After the construction of the railway from Cologne to the Sülztal , from 1910 on, Hoffnungsthal developed into a popular destination for those looking for relaxation from the big city. They liked to use the rowing boats on the river above a small dam. From 1928, the “Ammerland” forest swimming pool on the Sülz between Hope Valley and Rösrath was another attraction, especially for young people. When the open-air swimming pool in Hopesthal was opened in 1937, the swimming pool on the river gradually lost its importance. Below the "Ammerland" part of the Sülzwasser is still directed into the Mühlengraben. The water no longer drives a mill, but is of great importance for the ecology of the Sülzaue and the preservation of Eulenbroich Castle . The campsite begins at the Mühlengraben weir and stretches a few hundred meters downstream along the Sülz.
An expert from the Lindlar Open-Air Museum gave a lecture on camping culture, as it has been cultivated by the Rösrath Camping Community since 1973. An employee of the Biological Station Rhein-Berg explained the fauna and flora of the Sülzaue during an ecological walk . History and stories about the Sülzaue were the focus of a historical walk with an "old hope thaler".

For the monks and nuns in monasteries like Altenberg to have their own farms and gardens essential. A lecture on Romanesque and modernism dealt with this 1000 year old church building tradition . In a further lecture, the veneration of saints was presented then and now. While walking through Herkenrath , a member of the parish described the diverse relationships between church and village.

Blacksmith's shop in the Bergisches Museum for Mining, Crafts and Trades
Up until the 1950s there was a forge in many Bergisch villages . Horseshoes for the horses, fittings for the wooden cart wheels, scythes, forks , harrows, plows and so on were manufactured and repaired in these workshops for local needs. The changes in agriculture, handicrafts and industry made the forges, often inherited over generations, disappear.
The production of horseshoes was demonstrated in an old forge in Delling . In a mini-workshop, visitors could try forging a horseshoe. A lecture highlighted the history of the blacksmith families in Kürten.

A lecture about farms along the old Heerstraße set the mood for a tour of the Höfchen house . The manor house was built around 1820. For more than seventy years, the Bayer Group has been operating an experimental farm on the surrounding land that focuses on fruit, vegetables and climate change. The house and the estate with the weather station and apiary were presented on various tours.

Mining was already practiced in the Bergisches Land in Roman times . In the years that followed, in Wermelskirchen until the 19th century, there were repeated attempts to find “happiness in the mountains”. A mining archaeological hike led to the relics of the “Braver Mann” and “Primus” pits in the Dhünn valley .

The history of Bahnhofstrasse came to life in a lecture and two guided tours. This street has shaped the cityscape since 1867. The focus of the considerations was the time around 1900 . On the extra tour, the private house No. 21, a city villa built in 1898, could be viewed. Historical pictures of the street were exhibited in Café Bahnhofstrasse 20.

Two hikes along the Lerbach and through the Milchborntal showed the importance of small bodies of water for the people of a big city. Both midday and afternoon hikes were carried out by the environmental expert Mark vom Hof . They started at the Naturfreundehaus Hardt .

The famous composer Karlheinz Stockhausen is buried in the forest cemetery of the still rural community of Kürten . After a musical performance it was possible to visit the tomb.

Haus Landscheid was mentioned as a knight's seat as early as the 14th century. The current buildings were erected in the 18th century. In 2009/2010 they were renovated and expanded. Since then there has been a hotel with a restaurant and a day clinic. Two lectures highlighted the long history and the extensive renovation. Then there was the opportunity to visit the house.

In Overath, which has been Catholic for centuries, the Church of St. Mary's Visitation in Marialinden is a widely visible symbol of piety. The Catholic parish celebrated its 500th anniversary in the summer of 2015. The Protestant Christians who came to Overath after the Second World War built the Church of Reconciliation in Overath-Mitte and the Church of Peace in Neichen. Two lectures dealt with the architects Otto Bartning and Peter Paul Smrha. Another lecture examined pilgrimages in the Rhineland .

The Altenberg Cathedral was the Cistercian monastery church for centuries . After the secularization of 1803, the owners changed several times. The building was used as a factory at times. In 1815 a fire broke out that destroyed the roof. Then the cathedral fell into disrepair. In the first half of the 19th century, numerous painters used the ruins as motifs. A lecture and a hike showed some examples. A second hike followed in the footsteps of the poet Johann Wolfgang von Goethe , the Prussian Crown Prince Friedrich Wilhelm and the architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel . They were among the celebrities who popularized tourism around Altenberg Cathedral. The historian Gabriele Emrich traced the development in her lecture on the coffee industry with guest rooms .

The Dhünntal as a partially sunken landscape with a future as a water competence region was the subject of two lectures. Two tours led to the dam and the extraction tower of the Great Dhünntalsperre . The announced changes in the water supply made this topic of the Heimat Expedition surprisingly topical.
  • Coral, lime & miners in Leichlingen
The mountains of sand on the city limits of Langenfeld are the remains of a sea that was here 320 million years ago. From the Middle Ages until the 1960s they supplied raw materials, most recently for the glass industry. Today only the street name Am Sandberg indicates this soil formation. Two lectures and an excursion dealt with it.
  • Carts, pilgrims, travel routes in Rösrath
One could go special ways in Rösrath. The journalist Bernd Franco Hoffmann, author of several railway books, led interested people on a former railway line to the long disused and disappeared Forsbach station . The Forsbacher have erected a monument to “their” train station in the Königsforst . A lecture with numerous old photos from the collection of the history association showed the possibility to get to Rösrath restaurants on rails and forest paths . The lecture took place in proper style in the former Whiskey Bill restaurant in Forsbach.

Flyer

For each homeland expedition there was a uniformly designed flyer as a basis for information. Each of the eight themes was presented on one page. A color was assigned to each theme. On the back there were notes on the hikes, the program items for children, the Open Monument Day and general tips. A section of the Prussian General Staff Map from 1816–1847 was printed as the background for the flyer .

Expedition Heimat 2.0

Various topics from the past years up to 2015 are to be taken up in a new way from 2017 and examined in more depth. This is done under the name Expedition Heimat 2.0 . For 2017, the topic was an intensive examination of the organ in Kürten .
