occupation

Schlangengrube is a television film from the crime series Tatort . The contribution produced by WDR is the 1060th episode of the crime scene. The first broadcast took place on May 27, 2018 on the German broadcaster Das Erste . The investigator duo Thiel and Boerne are investigating their 33rd case.

action

Patrizia Merkens, who is seriously ill with the lungs, is found murdered in her apartment. Commissioners Frank Thiel and Nadeshda Krusenstern are investigating at the instigation of the public prosecutor Ungewitter, since the Münster public prosecutor Wilhelmine Klemm is one of the suspects. She is the neighbor of the dead and was in a long-term feud with her because of their excessive animal welfare behavior. As a cat hair allergy sufferer, she had tried in vain to complain against Merkens' massive cat keeping, and now she has no alibi for the time of the crime. For Klemm it is very important that her trusted inspector Thiel conducts the investigation, but he is just about to go on a cycling holiday with his father. So she “convinces” Herbert to pretend his son has sprained his ankle so that the tour has to be postponed. Thiel and Krusenstern do research at the Münster Zoo , as Patrizia Merkens visited here almost every day. She was a great patron of the zoo and well known here. While checking the account movements, the investigators come across Bente Frommer, who had recently received a large sum from Merkens. However, the questioning from Frommers initially does not help Thiel and Krusenstern.

Thefts and unexplained deaths of zoo animals have been increasing in the zoo recently. Since Merkens was very interested, Thiel investigates undercover and can be hired as a temporary worker at the zoo. He soon discovers a list of loss animals that the victim had meticulously made. During his investigations, Prof. Boerne also comes across a possible illegal animal dealer when he is researching the origin of the snake venom, which Merkens had administered for therapeutic purposes against her cancer. The inquiry with the responsible animal carcass disposal agency reveals that only a third of the animals on the list of animals were delivered there. Thus, the zoo veterinarian Gremlich comes under suspicion of having only anesthetized the missing animals in order to then smuggle them out of the zoo as supposedly "dead" and sell them. When Thiel wants to arrest Gremlich, he is found dead in Bente Frommers workshop. As Thiel finds out, Frommer is the half-sister of Patrizia Merkens and would, if the will not be found, that Merkens wrote in favor of the zoo, would inherit the entire fortune of her half-sister. Thiel now suspects that Frommer and Gremlich carried out the illegal animal trade together and got into a dispute. However, Prof. Boerne accidentally found the real culprit when he was doing research at a specialty meat dealer for his hobby, cooking. Boerne has long been interested in working for the gourmet and television producer Dr. Stockmann, and so he finds out that this man pays enormous sums to zoo director Schönweis in order to be able to enjoy culinary rarities of protected animals. Thiel then arrests Schönweis, who murdered Patrizia Merkens when she discovered his machinations. He grimly got out of the way because after Merkens death he wanted to get out and make everything public.

Finally, father and son Thiel set off on a bike tour.

background

The film was shot from November 14, 2017 to December 14, 2017 in Cologne (Zoo), Münster ( Allwetterzoo Münster ) and the surrounding area. The premiere took place on May 25, 2018 - two days before the first broadcast - in the Münster Cineplex in the presence of actors and a film team. During the filming, Münster's best-known penguin in particular gained new fame: Sandy, the female African penguin from the Allwetterzoo Münster, hit the headlines years ago because she fell in love with her keeper and never left him. The trusting animal became known nationwide through television shows. In the meantime, Sandy shows a typical behavior and even hatches offspring. Tame Sandy was still ideal for the crime scene.

Reviews

Holger Gertz from the Süddeutsche Zeitung commented: “In fact, this Munster from Axel Prahl and Jan Josef Liefers also lives from their presence and the dialogues. And what Stefan Cantz and Jan Hinter write into the script is still more original than much that is otherwise broadcast on German TV. "

At Spiegel Online , Christian Buß said : “As always with the Münster 'crime scene': The crime thriller is only a vehicle to transport as many politically incorrect gags as possible into prime time. This time mainly at the expense of cute and not so cute animals. "

Tilmann P. Gangloff from tittelbach.tv judged the film as “a feast for everyone who particularly appreciates the little skirmishes between the two main characters Thiel and Boerne, and yet it is also an interesting crime thriller; In the past, the stories with Thiel and Boerne were far too often just a pretext for joke-rich dialogues between Axel Prahl and Jan Josef Liefers. With 'Schlangengrube' [...] Stefan Cantz and Jan Hinter, the creators of the two eternal arguers, have succeeded in creating a remarkable combination of crime and comedy, especially since they have two levels that have run parallel for a long time - here the search for the murderer of a zoo patron , there Boerne's idea for a forensic cooking show - in the end, link them together in an amazing way. The secret star of the film, however, is a penguin who has taken the chief inspector into his heart. "

The film service rated the film with three out of five possible stars and found it "entertaining with original ideas and successful dialogues."

Allusions

Without further explanation, Boerne suddenly - and only for a few minutes - has a new assistant who apparently suffers from a mild form of Down's syndrome . Apparently an allusion to the pathology assistant Geung in the audio book series Dr. Siri.

Audience rating

The first broadcast of Schlangengrube on May 27, 2018 was seen by 12 million viewers in Germany and achieved a market share of 37.8 percent for Das Erste .
