The Drew Carey Show is an American comedy - series , developed by Bruce Helford and Drew Carey made by Warner Bros. Television for the US network ABC was produced where they from 1995 bis 2004 was first broadcast.

action

Drew and his three friends Oswald, Lewis and Kate have known each other since childhood and are inseparable. Nevertheless, they love it when they can poke each other's arms, they don't even shy away from hearty strokes.

The quartet's center of life is on the one hand Drew's house - and his garage, where the four of them run a mini-brewery (their Buzz beer is a mix of beer and coffee ) - on the other hand, Warsaw , a Polish pub. Here they start their attempts from time to time to end up with the opposite sex. But only Kate can do this without any problems. In the course of the series, she also gets together with Oswald and Drew, which Lewis always leaves behind quite jealous ("I want to have something with one of us too!").

Drew's parents live in Florida . That's why he rarely sees her (although that doesn't bother him much). It becomes more problematic when his brother Steve - an avowed transvestite - moves in with him. The situation gets worse for Drew when Steve falls in love with his intimate enemy Mimi and they even marry.

main characters

Drew Carey

The main character of the series is Drew Carey. He is in his mid-thirties and works as the assistant personnel manager at Cleveland's Winfried Louder department store . And this is where his problems begin. He's been waiting for a promotion for years, but it's not coming, even though there isn't a senior hiring manager in the house and Drew is doing all the work anyway. In addition, he always has incompetent bosses in front of his nose and behind him the chief secretary Mimi Bobeck, with whom he is deeply hostile.

He always has his problems with women. He's a nice guy, but he's got massive weight problems. Ironically, although the problems with women were laid out as the basic problem of the series, he has various - exceptionally pretty - girlfriends for much of the series.

He lives in a suburb of Cleveland in a normal American house that he bought from his parents. In the small garden there is a pool table where he and his friends can play in all seasons, in sun, wind, rain or snow. There is a mini-brewery in his garage where he and his friends brew their beer, "Buzz-Bier", a caffeinated beer, as a sideline.

Lewis Kiniski

Lewis works for a pharmaceutical company - Drug & Co. - as a kind of girl for everything, including a. it is used again and again for "animal experiments". His reports from there suggest that it is a kind of modern Franconian laboratory. But that suits him: deep inside Lewis is a psychopath who keeps popping up. Lewis is the typical man who might one day give in to the voices he hears.

Lewis, Oswald and Drew have known each other since school. Like his two friends, Lewis has great problems finding a girlfriend. He doesn't look bad, but is a real freak - among other things as a Star Trek fan. He lives with Oswald above the clique's regular pub, Warsaw .

Oswald Lee Harvey ( sic! )

Oswald is a nice guy - but if you were to compare your intelligence, a bread would win. He originally earned his little money as a hobby DJ . Then he realized while doing a temporary job how nice it is to earn real money. Since then he has been delivering parcels for a parcel service.

Of all (male) friends, dealing with women is the easiest for him.

Kate O'Brien

Kate is the only female part of the quartet. Sometimes she tends to panic, even hysteria and is often not far from madness. She has her problems with men. After working as a “challenge cup” (among other things as a friend of Oswald), she tries to find happiness with and with Drew. But when the wedding is approaching, she gets cold feet.

After working in Drew's department store for a while, she couldn't find a new profession after her dismissal, and so she works her way through various jobs.

Mimi Bobeck Carey

Mimi and Drew - that was hate at first sight. She is fat, wears flashy clothes and thick, colored make-up. She had originally wanted to apply to be a makeup saleswoman, but interpreted Drew's hesitation as sexual harassment. To avoid a lawsuit, she is given the post of chief secretary.

This is the beginning of an endless argument. Both play the most malicious pranks on each other (whereby Mimi is usually the more devious part, who even shipped Drew to China once ). Their relationship takes on a new dimension when Mimi and Drew's brother Steve become a couple and get married.

Remarks

A special trademark of the series became the occasional interspersed musical scenes in which the actors sing and dance themselves. Two of these numbers even became the second and third opening credits of the series. The title song of the opening credits was Moon over Parma, written by Robert McGuire and sung by Drew Carey himself . 1996/97 and 2002 was Five O'Clock World of The Vogues title, 1997-2001 Cleveland Rocks to The Presidents of the United States of America . In the last two seasons, the three songs were used alternately, but repeatedly voiced by different performers.

The outdoor shots for the group's favorite pub , Warsaw , were shot on location in Cleveland - although the pub is originally called Memphis . It was also held at the Winfred Louder department store, which is originally called Halle’s .

The character of Drew Carey's opponent , Mimi Bobeck , was originally only intended as a one-time supporting role. However, the positive reaction from viewers led to a steady engagement, which gave the series one of its distinctive features. On February 26, 1997, a crossover of the series The Drew Carey Show (episode # 2.18), Ellen (# 4.19), Grace (# 4.19) and Mit Herz und Scherz (# 9.15) was broadcast in the United States . On the Drew Carey Show , Paige Clark ( Joely Fisher ) and Spence Kovak ( Jeremy Piven ) from Ellen , Grace Kelly ( Brett Butler ) from Grace and Luther Van Damme ( Jerry Van Dyke ) from Mit Herz und Scherz appeared. Drew Carey, in turn, appeared in Ellen and Grace , while Mimi Bobeck appeared in Mit Herz und Scherz . She later also made guest appearances in the series A Trio to Bite (# 2.6 on October 28, 1998) and Alone Among Neighbors (# 2.1 on September 24, 1999) as well as in two episodes of the game show The Price Is Right (2009 and 2010, respectively April 1st). The series mentioned share a common series universe through these mutual visits . In 2001 a TV special called Rock & Roll Back to School Special was broadcast in the United States , in which the main characters of the series appeared.
