action

Royal Tenenbaum once left his wife Etheline and the children. When he returned after several years, his talented children, who were facing sporting or literary careers at the time, struggled with numerous difficulties: adoptive daughter Margot and eldest son Richie suffer from their more than brotherly feelings for one another, and the second son Chas, who died has not overcome his wife, tries pathologically to protect his sons from possible dangers.

Meanwhile, Etheline is thinking of marrying tax advisor Henry Sherman. Royal feigns cancer and asks the family for forgiveness and reconciliation. He moves into Etheline's house, especially since he was kicked out of his hotel for unpaid bills. Chas rejects a reconciliation with his father; he even gets angry when he tries to befriend his sons. Sherman also argues with Royal and investigates the inconsistencies in his story.

Margot's husband, St. Clair, hires a private investigator to find Margot's former lover. Meanwhile, Richie attempts suicide to get Margot's attention. She kisses him during a clarifying conversation, but demands that it remain a secret, unfulfilled love.

When Royals' vertigo is exposed, he has to go back on the street. But after just a few days with his family, he realized how much they mean to him. Eventually he gives his wife the requested divorce papers so that she can marry Sherman and makes up with his children. In the end, he and his family die of a heart attack .

Reviews

film-dienst 5/2002 wrote that the film creates “with an abundance of snapshots” “the distant image of a social and family universe, whose introverted inhabitants it sensitively” caricatures and “behind their absurd facades, subtle mourning about lost life chances appear” . Predominantly “the meticulously arranged sets and a highly artificial staging require a concentrated reception in order to be able to exploit the wealth of allusions and associations” .

Prisma Online wrote that the director came up with "a well-known team of actors who won over both the audience and the critics" . The “amusing mixture of drama and subtle comedy” is “an excellent ensemble film” that the director and actor Owen Wilson wrote for the actors.

Cinema 3/2002 magazine described the film as "funny" and "sad" at the same time . The Süddeutsche Zeitung of March 13, 2002 praised the film music and the ability to arouse emotions. In the magazine TV Spielfilm 6/2002 the film was described as "intelligent" and "deep black" .

Trivia

  • In the English original, the narrator is spoken by Alec Baldwin .
  • Richie Tenenbaum's falcon Mordecai disappeared without a trace during filming. At some point there was a ransom demand, but it was not met by the end of shooting. For this reason, the falcon had "a lot more white feathers" when it appeared at the end of the film, as Richie Tenenbaum noted. It's a different bird.
