Bernard L. Madoff is a wealthy and successful investor. The businessman manages the wealth of wealthy business people for whom he makes great profits through investments. Because of this, he has an excellent reputation in the financial world. However, few people know that Madoff is a scam. Only a handful of confidants, including his right-wing husband Frank DiPascali, know that he has been concealing his customers' fortunes for years with a huge Ponzi fraud. Even his own ambitious sons, Mark and Andrew, who are part of his company, are unaware of the billion-dollar scams.
When the scandal comes to light, the luxurious world of Madoff collapses. He ends up in jail and his scam becomes world news. Only his wife Ruth still supports him, although she loses almost all social contacts as a result of the scandal. His sons want nothing more to do with him. Although they were not involved in the scam, they too are despised by the media and frustrated citizens. The two suffer from the stress and media attention associated with the scandal. Mark eventually commits suicide and Andrew dies of cancer.
In prison, Madoff is interviewed by journalist Diana Henriques. He looks back on his life, cheating, and the financial and emotional damage he has caused. Madoff shows little remorse and doesn't quite seem to understand how serious his crimes were.
