Theophil Dachtler

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Theophil or Gottlieb Dachtler (* 1553 or 1554 in Biberach an der Riss ; † after 1630 probably in Strasbourg ); Pseudonyms: Theophil Elychnius and Friedebertus Theophilus , was a German lawyer and author.

Life

Childhood and studies

Gottlieb or Theophil Dachtler was a son of Mag. Jakob Dachtler the Elder. J. (circa 1525-1598). He was born in Biberach (" Biberacensis "), where his father was pastor from 1553 to around 1557. He spent his childhood from around 1558 in Wiesensteig in the county of Helfenstein ; there was also a Latin school there. In 1562/63 Dachtler must have witnessed the great witch hunt, in which at least 63 women and men were executed as " witches and fiends " in the Wiesensteig rulership, in which his father was superintendent .

Dachtler enrolled on October 22, 1568 as " Theophilus Dachtlerus, M. Jacobi Dachtleri Filius " in Tübingen ; his father was a professor for the Hebrew language in Tübingen at the time. Dachtler became a Baccalaureus on March 31, 1574 and acquired his master's degree on August 1, 1576. Professors Anastasius Demler (1520–1591) and Johannes Hochmann (1528–1603) taught at the law faculty of the University of Tübingen , whose lectures he attended. Dachtler was a student of the professor of poetry and history Nicodemus Frischlin (1547-1590). One of Dachtler's lecture notes on Horace's " Carmina " has survived. In Tübingen Dachtler was located in 1576 in the stud book of Wilhelm Friedrich Lutz , a (1551 to 1597).

Strasbourg

Theophil Dachtler settled in the imperial city of Strasbourg around 1580 and married there in 1583. Mag. Dachtler became council consultant and “ Actuarius ” ( notary ) of the “small council” of the city. He published legal opinions, economic considerations in the genre of a prince's mirror , poems, satirical writings and anti-Catholic pamphlets in the style of " brutalism ", in particular against the Roman Curia and against the orders of the Jesuits , Dominicans and Franciscans . Alluding to the Greek “τὸ ἐλλύχνιον” = “ wick ”, Dachtler chose the humanist name “ Elychnius ” as a pseudonym in his publications .

In a sharp satireRelatio ex Parnasso ” in 1618, Dachtler opposed the conversion of the Jesuit college in Molsheim into a Catholic university for Alsace in that year : a Jesuit delegation from Molsheim appears at the court camp of Apollo on Mount Parnassus , and the others on the Rhine suing universities ( Cologne , Mainz , Freiburg , Basel , Strasbourg , Heidelberg ) - unsuccessfully. This writing " Relatio ex Parnasso " from 1618 contains many details about the literary history of Alsace.

Dachtler corresponded with the Basel pastor Jakob Brandmüller the Elder. Ä. († 1629). He participated in the commemorative publications “ Daphnis Seu Actus Caesareus ” (1616/17) for Johann Paul Crusius (1588–1629) on the occasion of his poet's coronation and “ Novis Laureae ” (1619) for Mag. Johann Peter Thomas Walliser. In 1620 Dachtler mediated the coronation of Mag. Samuel Gloner (1598–1642) and in 1623 that of the Strasbourg student and later professor of poetry in Reval Timotheus Polus (1599–1642) by Johann Jakob Grasser (1579–1627) in Basel.

Dachtler collected some epigrams from the estate of his predecessor Sebastian Brant , which have been preserved on this copy. Dachtler also made a copy of the lost old Vergichtbuch (Book of Confessions) of the city of Strasbourg from 1462 to 1473, which itself has also been lost, but is documented by an extract by Jakob Wencker (1668–1743).

The Strasbourg university professor Matthias Bernegger dedicated his pacifist text “ Proaulium Tuba Pacis ”, directed against Caspar Schoppe , to Dachtler in 1620 . In the British Museum the edition by Martin Opitz , Teutsche Poemata und Aristarchus the contempt for teutscher Sprach , Strasbourg 1624, has been preserved, published by Julius Wilhelm Zincgref and given in 1624 to " his friend and patron " Dachtler.

1627 was “ Dn. M. Theophilo Dachtlero, Minoris Senatus Actuar "one of the recipients of a collection of poems edited by Caspar Brülow about the book of Jona and as" Theophilus Tachtlerus "recipient of an edition by Wolfgang Crustehenius († before 1627) by the Venetian Senator Marcantonio Marcello (1545-1606) on the secular rights of the Roman popes, which was published posthumously by the Frankfurt publisher Johann Beyer († 1666). In 1629 Dachtler gave obituaries for the professor of poetry Johannes Paul Crusius (1588–1629) and in 1630 for the Strasbourg doctor Dr. Jeremias Funck (Funccius) (* around 1570/75; † 1630) with out.
