Thomas Phillip O'Neill III (born September 20, 1944 in Cambridge , Massachusetts ) is an American politician . Between 1975 and 1983 he was lieutenant governor of the state of Massachusetts.

Career

Thomas O'Neill is the son of Tip O'Neill (1912-1994), the longtime speaker of the US House of Representatives . He attended North Cambridge Catholic High School and Boston College . Then he graduated from Harvard University affiliated Kennedy School of Government . Politically, he joined the Democratic Party . He was a member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives in 1973 and 1974 . In August 1980 he took part as a delegate at the Democratic National Convention in New York City , at which President Jimmy Carter was nominated for re-election, which was unsuccessful.

In 1974, O'Neill was elected Lieutenant Governor of Massachusetts alongside Michael Dukakis . He held this office after being re-elected between 1975 and 1983. He was Deputy Governor . Since 1979 he served under the new governor Edward J. King . After serving as Lieutenant Governor, he worked in the public relations industry. He was president of Bay State Investors and then chairman of his own firm, O'Neill and Associates .
