Arthur W. Coolidge
Arthur William Coolidge (born October 13, 1881 in Cumberland County , Maine , † January 23, 1952 in Reading , Massachusetts ) was an American politician . Between 1947 and 1949 he was lieutenant governor of the state of Massachusetts.
Career
Arthur Coolidge was a fourth cousin of President Calvin Coolidge . Until 1903 he studied at Tufts University . After a subsequent law degree at Harvard University and his admission to the bar in 1906, he began to work in this profession. He later embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party . Between 1937 and 1940 he was a member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives ; from 1941 to 1946 he was a member of the State Senate , which he took over as chairman in 1945.
In 1946, Coolidge was elected lieutenant governor of Massachusetts alongside Robert F. Bradford . He held this office between 1947 and 1949. He was Deputy Governor . In 1948 he was not re-elected. In 1950 he unsuccessfully applied for the office of governor. In addition to his legal and political activities, Coolidge was also a successful businessman. He was president of several companies and director of various banks. He also served as director of the Washington Hospital in Boston . He was also a member of several organizations and associations, including the Freemasons . He died on January 23, 1952 in Reading, Middlesex County .
