Byron Weston

Byron Curtis Weston (born April 9, 1832 in Dalton , Berkshire County , Massachusetts , †  November 8, 1898 ) was an American politician . Between 1880 and 1883 he was lieutenant governor of the state of Massachusetts.

Career

Byron Weston came from a wealthy New England family . He attended public schools in East Hampton and in Beloit ( Wisconsin ). He then began an apprenticeship in his uncle's paper mill in Saugerties, New York State . Then he worked as a journeyman in this branch. At the beginning of the Civil War , he worked in Berkshire County, where he helped raise the 49th Regiment of Volunteers. As a captain, he himself commanded a company of this weapons association. After serving in the military, Weston established the Weston Paper Company in Dalton, which existed until it was sold in 2008. Politically, he joined the Republican Party . In 1876 he was elected to the Massachusetts Senate.

In 1879, Weston was elected Lieutenant Governor of Massachusetts, alongside John D. Long . He held this office between 1880 and 1883. He was Deputy Governor . After serving as Lieutenant Governor, he continued his previous activities. He was married to Julia Clark Mitchell, with whom he had ten children. One of his grandchildren was the cook Julia Child (1912-2004). Byron Weston also made financial contributions to various institutions in his hometown. He died in Dalton on November 8, 1898.
