Sumner G. Whittier

Sumner Gage Whittier (born July 4, 1911 in Everett , Massachusetts , †  January 8, 2010 in Baltimore , Maryland ) was an American politician . Between 1953 and 1957 he was lieutenant governor of the state of Massachusetts.

Career

Sumner Whittier attended Everett High School and Boston University . During World War II he served in the United States Navy . Politically, he joined the Republican Party . In 1956 he was a substitute delegate and four years later a regular delegate to their Republican National Conventions . He previously served on Everett City Council, the Massachusetts House of Representatives, and the State Senate .

In 1952, Whittier was elected lieutenant governor of Massachusetts alongside Christian Herter . He held this office between 1953 and 1957. He was Deputy Governor . In 1956 he unsuccessfully applied for the office of governor. After serving as lieutenant governor, he worked for the Federal Veterans Affairs Agency until 1964 and then for social security in Baltimore until he was 80. He died there on January 8, 2010 at the age of 98.
