John Nesmith

John Nesmith (born August 3, 1793 in Windham , Rockingham County , New Hampshire , †  October 15, 1869 ) was an American politician . In 1862 he was lieutenant governor of the state of Massachusetts .

Career

John Nesmith attended public schools in his home country. Until 1822 he lived in his hometown Windham, where he held a few local offices and completed a five-year apprenticeship in a goods store. In 1819 and 1820 he was town treasurer in Windham. In 1822 he moved to nearby Derry . He later went into commerce with his brother in New York State . The brothers lived in Lowell from 1831(Massachusetts) where they worked in the real estate business. John Nesmith has also worked in various other industries, including textile manufacturing. He acquired several companies in this sector. This made him a successful businessman. In Lowell, Nesmith also made a name for himself when he came up with a concept for improving the city's water supply, which was then successfully implemented. In the 1850s he became a member of the newly formed Republican Party . In both 1860 and 1864 he was one of the electors who officially elected Abraham Lincoln as US President .

In 1862, Nesmith was elected lieutenant governor of Massachusetts alongside John Albion Andrew . He held this office only for one term in 1862. He was Deputy Governor . He then renounced another candidacy. After serving as Lieutenant Governor, he worked for the federal tax authorities until twelve days before his death. He died on October 15, 1869.
