Fresach is a municipality with 1216 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) in the Villach-Land district in Carinthia . Fresach is a climatic health resort .
geography
Geographical location
The municipal area lies entirely in the Nock Mountains ( Mirnock -Verditz) between the lower Drautal and Umgebung valley . The Drau forms the border only in the southwest .
Community structure
The community comprises three cadastral communities (area as of December 31, 2019):
- Fresach (1,053.89 ha)
- Mooswald (1,694.86 ha)
- Tragwinkl (1,131.21 ha)

history
There are first finds from the Bronze Age (axes). The Slavs settled in the area around 590 AD, and the Bavarians in the 8th century.
The Counts of Ortenburg were enfeoffed with the area around the 11th century. The first church was built in Fresach in the 12th century. In 1478 Fresach was destroyed by the Turks. After the Ortenburgers died out in 1518, the area came under Habsburg rule.
In the early 16th century, the majority of the population became Protestant. Even after the Counter-Reformation, which forced conversion to the Catholic Church, many remained secretly true to their faith ( crypto protesters ). After the tolerance patent of Emperor Joseph II , a Protestant parish in Fresach was founded again in 1782. The first schoolhouse was built in 1787.
In 1849 the two communities Mooswald and Fresach were founded, Mooswald was dissolved in 1964, most of the former community area came to Fresach.
In May 1978 the 7th East-West Literature Discussion took place in Fresach, in which writers and translators from eleven countries from both sides of the “ Iron Curtain ” took part.

The municipality of Fresach had 1,316 inhabitants (2001), 99.3% of whom were Austrian citizens.
As religious affiliation 66.6% stated Protestant, 30.0% Roman Catholic, 0.2% Islamic. 2.5% were without religious belief.
Culture and sights
- New building for the Evangelical Diocesan Museum , built in 2011 for the Carinthian State Exhibition 2011 and received a state building award
- Tolerance prayer house (built 1784) and rectory (late 17th century) belong to the museum
- Evangelical Church (1949–1951)
- Catholic Parish Church of St. Blaise (1565)
- Crayfish hiking mile (stone crabs)
Economy and Infrastructure
According to the 2001 census of workplaces , there were 33 workplaces with 98 employees in the municipality and 449 out-commuters. There were 104 agricultural and forestry holdings (35 of them in the main occupation), which together farmed 3,502 ha (1999).
Fresach is a "climatic health resort", whereby tourism plays a role.
The access to traffic is via the state roads L 37, L 39 and L 40.
Since April 2001 there is a base (station "RK-1") of the ARA air rescue in Fresach .

The municipal council consists of 15 members. Since the municipal council election in 2015 , the mandates have been distributed as follows:

coat of arms
The arms of front Fresach shows a green birch sheet for the place name is (from Slovenian BRÉZÉ = where in a Birch wood), at the rear of a golden chalice with about a floating wafer as a symbol of Lutheran faith. The official blazon of the coat of arms reads:
- "In a split shield in front a hanging green birch leaf in gold, behind in green a golden evening meal chalice, above a silver host."
The municipality's coat of arms and flag were awarded on August 31, 1978. The municipal flag is yellow-green with an incorporated coat of arms.
