history

Foundation and All I Was

Mark Tremonti (vocals, guitar)

The band's founder and namesake is Creed - and Alter-Bridge - guitarist Mark Tremonti . He decided to make a solo album, as he said he would write so many songs that he could not publish because they would not fit musically to his main bands Creed or Alter Bridge. Together with the two Submersed musicians Eric Friedman (guitar, bass) and Garrett Whitlock ( drums ), Tremonti, who also took over the vocals, recorded the debut album All I Was , which was produced by Michael Baskette . Tremonti used a three-month time slot for the recordings, during which Alter Bridge singer Myles Kennedy was on tour with Slash . All I Was was released in July 2012 on the record label Fret12, which Tremonti founded together with his brother, and reached number 29 in the US album charts . At the same time the band played their first concert in Orlando. The Creed and Alter Bridge bassist Brian Marshall helped out at the first concerts , before Wolfgang Van Halen first supported the band as a live musician in September 2012 and then became a permanent member. Wolfgang Van Halen is the son of Van Halen guitarist Eddie Van Halen and nephew of Van Halen drummer Alex Van Halen .

Cauterize and Dust

Wolfgang Van Halen (bass)

At the Loudwire Music Awards 2012 Tremonti were nominated in the Best New Artist category, but lost second to the musician Deuce . A year later, Mark Tremonti returned to Alter Bridge and released the album Fortress . In the summer of 2014, Mark Tremonti began working on a second studio album. The band worked again with producer Michael Baskette and recorded 20 songs in the fall of 2014. Initially, the release of a double album was planned, but the band rejected this plan again. Mark Tremonti stated in an interview that a double album would not have given each of these songs the attention it deserves. Instead, two albums with ten songs each were released. It started Cauterize in June 2015. The album reached # 20 in the US and No. 34 in the German album charts.

On the following tour, during which the band played at the Download Festival and the Graspop Metal Meeting , the band had to do without Wolfgang Van Halen, who was on tour with his main band Van Halen at the same time. Tanner Keegan acted as a substitute. A co-headlining tour through the USA with Trivium followed in autumn 2015 , before Mark Tremonti went back to the studio with Alter Bridge to record the new album The Last Hero . At the Loudwire Music Awards 2015, Mark Tremonti was named best guitarist. In April 2016, Dust followed, the third studio album of his solo band with the second half of the songs recorded in autumn 2014. The band made it clear in advance that the songs on the Dust album were not B-sides or throwaway songs. Dust reached number 34 in the US charts and number 31 in the German charts. In the summer of 2016 Tremonti played at various festivals in Europe such as B. the Rockavaria , the Graspop Metal Meeting, the Sonisphere Festival , the Hellfest , Copenhell , FortaRock Festival and the Rock in Vienna .

A dying machine

In February 2018 the band signed a contract with Napalm Records, to which Mark Tremonti's main band Alter Bridge is already under contract. On June 8, 2018 the fourth studio album A Dying Machine was released, which was again produced by Michael Baskette . Wolfgang Van Halen was no longer listed as a member when the album was announced. It is the first concept album in the band's history. The story takes place at the end of the 21st century and is about people and artificial life forms trying to coexist with one another. Mark Tremonti is working with author John Shirley on a book publication. A Dying Machine reached number three in Switzerland, number 14 in Austria, number 18 in the German and number 19 in the British album charts. In the US, the album only reached number 57.

A headlining tour through Europe followed in the summer as well as individual concerts in the support program of Iron Maiden and festival appearances at Wacken Open Air , the Metaldays and Copenhell. For the US tour in autumn 2018, the band had to do without drummer Garrett Whitlock for personal reasons. A long-time friend of Eric Friedman's helped out with Ryan Bennett as a substitute. In spring 2019 Tremonti will tour the USA together with Sevendust .

style

Tremonti's music is very different from his other bands, Alter Bridge and Creed. Mark Tremonti explained to the German magazine Metal Hammer that the material for his solo band was “significantly more metal-heavy in terms of songwriting than songs by Alter Bridge”. Metal is "still his favorite music" and named Metallica as a major influence. Much of the music used for his band was rejected as "too metal" by his bandmates at Alter Bridge and Creed. John D. Buchanan described Tremonti's music as "influenced by hard, fast-paced Thrash Metal that has a strong melodic core and hints of the post-grunge that made his main bands so popular". Buchanan compared the band to the early Metallica. Joe Daly of online magazine The Nervous Breakdown noted that every song is centered around strong, melodic textures that would "add depth" to the music.
