The Tres Hombres is a former war fish cutter (KFK), which was converted into a freighter after more than 60 years and has been running a climate-neutral freight service between Europe and the American continent since the end of 2009 .

The war trawlers were built, the largest series on behalf of the German Navy in 1942 as War auxiliary ships and should in peace as fishing boats are used. Of more than a thousand commissioned units, 612 were built, some of them abroad.

history

This example of a war fish cutter was built in 1943 at the Burmester shipyard in Swinoujscie , then Germany . Sunk for the first time in 1944, the KFK was used as a minesweeper in the Oslofjord after lifting in 1945 . After the end of the Second World War , it was converted into a fishing cutter and was, among other things, resident as a sea eagle on the Kiel Fjord . In 1979 it was sold to Ireland , where it was used as a ferry between Rossaveel and the Aran Islands until 1984 . The cutter, which was sunk and looted in 1985, was lifted and towed to Delft in 1986, where it was discovered by the current owners in 2007.

The model of the underwater ship was developed in 1935 by the Maierform company through experiments in the towing tank and was built many times over. The fuselage consists of ribs and struts made of folded sheet steel planked with softwood. The keel and stem are made of oak . As a KFK with a higher serial number, the specimen has a transom .

In Den Helder , the Netherlands, the hull was restored, a new stern was installed and the rigging was put up. The motor drive system was completely removed and the officers' room was created from the engine room. In December 2009 the Tres Hombres made its maiden voyage to the climate summit in Copenhagen . Six photovoltaic modules and two small wind generators provide electricity for the nautical equipment and lighting below deck.

concept

The three men ( Spanish tres hombres ) Andreas Lackner (* 1976 in Austria, was an activist for Greenpeace, worked on tall ships), Arjen van der Veen and Jorne Langelaan got to know each other on sailing ships and together they designed the concept for an emission-free freight service across the sea. As a pilot project, Tres Hombres is to expand the market niche Fairtransport and demonstrate its economic viability.

The Tres Hombres crosses the Atlantic every year . The ship leaves the Netherlands in October , loads stockfish in Norway , wine in France and olive oil in Portugal . The route then leads to Belém , Brazil , where wine and olive oil are unloaded and coffee beans and other fair trade products from the Amazon basin are loaded in return . On the way back, the Tres Hombres for rum and cocoa beans calls at the edge of the Caribbean, including the Antilles islands of Grenada and the Dominican Republic . Canned fish can be loaded on the Azores on the way back to Europe .

The Tres Hombres has a 55 cubic meter cargo space for 20 Euro pallets and carries a 35 t payload. In addition to the bunks for the seven-person crew, there is also a cabin for two passengers and a large cabin in the foredeck for eight trainees . For assistance in harbor maneuvers is a motorized dinghy with 4.45 meters in length and a 50  PS strong outboard engine carried.
