The USS New York City (SSN-696) was a nuclear-powered submarine of the United States Navy and belonged to the Los Angeles-class submarine to. The boat was named explicitly after the city of New York City , which is why the suffix City was added to the name for the first time . Earlier ships were called USS New York and were named after the 11th state .

history

The order to build SSN-696 was given to Electric Boat in early 1972 . In late 1973, the submarine was laid down at the Group's shipyard in Groton , Connecticut . After problems arose during construction, the boat could not be launched until June 1977. Godmother was the wife of the former defense minister and later energy minister , James R. Schlesinger . In March 1979, New York City officially went into service.

After almost exactly 18 years of service, New York City was decommissioned on April 30, 1997. This saved the Navy the money that would have had to be spent on the otherwise imminent refilling of the nuclear reactor with nuclear fuel . Since the boat already belonged to the outdated Flight I class, which lacked the vertical launching system of the newer boats, the decommissioning was a rather logical consequence.
