U 8 was a German submarine from Type II B , which in World War II by the German navy was used.
history
The order for the boat was awarded to the Germania shipyard in Kiel on July 20, 1934 . The keel was laid on March 25, 1935, the launch on July 16, 1935. The commissioning under Lieutenant Harald Grosse finally took place on August 5, 1935.
After commissioning, the boat belonged to the “Weddigen” submarine flotilla in Kiel from 1936 to 1937 . From October 1937 it was the reserve boat of the submarine flotilla "Lohs" and until January 3, 1940 the school boat of the submarine school flotilla in Neustadt . Then it was used from January 4, 1940 to April 12, 1940 in the U-Defense School. From April 13, 1940 to June 30, 1940 it served as a school and front boat in the 1st U-Flotilla in Kiel. Then it was used from July 1, 1940 to December 17, 1940 as a school boat in the 24th U-Flotilla in Memel , before it was commanded as a school boat for the 22nd U-Flotilla to Gotenhafen on December 18, 1940 . During the evacuation of the bases in front of the advancing Red Army, U 8 left Pillau on January 26, 1945 and moved to Wilhelmshaven .

Mission history
The boat left Kiel on May 19, 1940 at 7:30 p.m. for its first and only patrol and returned there on June 7, 1940 at 10:25 p.m. After marching through the Kiel Canal and being escorted to Brunsbüttel , the boat operated in the North Sea and the North Atlantic . No ships were sunk or damaged during this 19-day-long and approximately 1,700 nm above and 242 nm underwater undertaking.
Whereabouts
U 8 was self- sunk on May 2, 1945 in the western chamber of the Raederschleuse in Wilhelmshaven according to the long-standing rainbow order (position: 53 ° 31 ' N , 8 ° 10' E ) and later scrapped.
None of the crew members were killed during the boat's long service life.
