Life

In 1972 Giezendanner became head of the family-owned transport company. From March 1989 to November 1991 he was a member of the Grand Council of the Canton of Aargau before he was elected to the National Council on November 25, 1991 , where he was a member of the Commission for Transport and Telecommunications from 1991 to December 1, 2019. Politically, Giezendanner represented, among other things, the expansion of the A1 bottleneck in the Baregg Tunnel , which was defused with the opening of the third tunnel tube in 2003, a second tube on the Gotthard road tunnel (decided in the second attempt in 2016) and the lifting of the ban on circuit races in Switzerland . He criticizes the federal policy of shifting heavy transit traffic to rail as unqualified and inefficient.

In the 2011 parliamentary elections , he ran unsuccessfully for the resigned seat of the Council of States of Maximilian Reimann (SVP), who had been elected to the National Council.

His spirited appearance made him a frequent guest in television debates as the Arena of SRF 1 and Sun Talk of TeleZüri . He is a professed Christian and runs a Saurer vintage car park.

Giezendanner is widowed and has three children (two sons and one daughter) from his first marriage. Ulrich Giezendanner has been married to his long-term partner for the second time since 2017. Stefan Giezendanner has left Giezendanner AG and is now CEO of Mittelland Transporte AG. Stefan Giezendanner is still represented on the Board of Directors of Giezendanner AG.

His youngest son Benjamin Giezendanner (* 1982) has been a member of the SVP National Council since December 2, 2019. In the canton of Aargau, he was President of the Grand Council in 2017 (highest Aargauer).
