action

Shortly before Christmas, the wealthy widow Sonja Berger discovered a photo in the newspaper in which she recognized her childhood sweetheart Thomas, whom she had completely lost sight of. According to the report of a pilgrimage, he works as a city guide in Fátima, and so she asks Sister Hanna, the director of the local monastery, to accompany her to the Portuguese pilgrimage site. At first Hanna hesitates, but is encouraged by Wolfgang Wöller, the mayor of the fictional Lower Bavarian town of Kaltenthal, to start the trip. He even wants to accompany her. Of course, he has an ulterior motive because he thinks the rich widow is the legendary "Angel of Kaltenthal", who has just made homeless people happy again with anonymous donations. Since Wöller has rededicated 50,000 euros of donations, which were intended for the war orphans, for the shooting club for reasons of election tactics and now urgently has to fill this gap again, he hopes for the benevolence of the widow.

Arrived in Fátima, Sonja Berger is looking forward to seeing Thomas Breitner again, whom she can finally see again after more than 50 years. But the encounter turned out to be disappointing for Sonja, because Thomas never forgave her for having married another man at the time. He also has private problems that he now has to take care of and is not interested in another conversation with Sonja. The mission seems to have failed, but Sister Hanna does not want to give up anytime soon, although Wöller is pushing to leave. While Hanna is dealing with Wöller, Sonja meets with Thomas again. This time they have been talking to each other for a while and Sonja learns that Thomas fell out with his only son Paulo after the death of his wife. He is a fisherman and needs money to pay for the treatments for his sick son. But since he does not tell his father what he needs the money for, the latter considers him a failure that he does not want to continue to support. This makes Sonja sad, after all, she has had children and Hanna encourages her to reconcile the two. For them, this seems to be the real reason why the Lord brought them here to Fátima.

At home in Germany, the superior, Baroness Louise von Beilheim, has planned a Christmas concert with a famous tenor, but due to various irregularities the public order office is closing the venue and the superior urgently needs a replacement. Without further ado, she decides to move the concert to Kaltenthal Monastery, which means that Sister Hanna is in dire need of time so that she can be back in time.

Sister Hanna speaks to Thomas Breitner's daughter-in-law and learns more about the background to the falling out between father and son. In order to earn more money fishing, Paolo has not adhered to the catch quotas for some time and thus risks his existence. Since that is not enough, he steals his mother's jewelry from his father, whereupon Thomas Breitner files a complaint. Sister Hanna is determined to persuade Paolo to return the jewelry, which she succeeds in the end. Sister Hanna wants to bring the jewelry back to his father for him. At a traffic control, however, Hanna and Mayor Wöller are caught with the stolen property and both end up in prison. Sonja Berger and Thomas Breitner free them from this predicament, because after Breitner learns that his son has only done everything out of desperation and not out of selfishness, he withdraws his complaint. Sonja wants to pay for the costly treatment of the child as a small reparation, which finally allows father and son to come together again. She decides to stay in Fátima to spend the last years with Thomas. So Wöller's plan to receive a generous donation from the widow fails. As a small reward for his efforts, she only gives him an old letter that she wrote to Thomas 50 years ago but never sent because she did not know the address. He should read it and learn something about love and charity. So his only consolation remains a mystical apparition that he experiences and that he considers to be the “miracle of Fátima”.

Back in Kaltenthal just in time, Hanna had to enjoy the planned concert alone with her religious sisters, because the 100 guests invited by the superior got stuck in traffic jams and snowstorms. Only a few homeless people join them and one of them recognizes a very valuable postage stamp on the letter that Mayor Wöller has so carelessly lying next to him. Without a stamp, it should be worth almost 50,000 euros - for Wöller the real miracle of Kaltenthal.

Others

According to tradition , the place of pilgrimage Fátima, which forms the backdrop for this series special, is the place of an apparition of Mary that three shepherd children are said to have experienced in 1917.

criticism

Tilmann P. Gangloff from tittelbach.tv assesses this episode quite soberly and says: “The fourth ARD Christmas film with the ensemble from 'Um Himmels Willen' has everything to offer the fans of the series: In 'The miracle of Fatima 'The two main characters travel to Portugal, poison each other and at the same time solve all large and small conflicts in front of an exotic background. As always, Fritz Wepper has the best dialogues, the staging speed is manageable, the rest of the ensemble hardly gets beyond the status of cue-makers, and in the end everyone celebrates Christmas together.
