Ministry of Environment (Japan)
The Japanese Ministry of the Environment ( Japanese 環境 省 , Kankyō-shō ) was created in 2001 through the upgrading of the environmental agency established in 1971 ( 環境 庁 , kankyō-chō ) with a cabinet ranked as a ministry (- 省 , -shō ). In addition to the ministerial secretariat, it consists of the departments for: general environmental policy, global environment, water & atmosphere and nature conservation. The latter is also responsible for the national parks . With 227 billion yen (around 1.3 billion euros ) in the regular budget for fiscal year 2006, it is the ministry with the smallest budget.
