Lower castle

The lower castle (also called Schlößle or bird house ) is in Woringen in the Unterallgäu district in Bavaria .

history

The castle is located about 400 meters northwest of the parish church of our women in Woringen and is located on an artificially raised hill at 634  m above sea level. NN . The base of the building is square with a side length of 10.6 meters. It is believed that a Roman Burgus was originally located here to secure the Roman road from Cambodunum ( Kempten ) to Caelius Mons ( Kellmünz an der Iller ). In 1323 Konrad von Rothenstein received the order from Archduke Leopold I of Austria to build two castles (Upper and Lower Castle) in Woringen. In this context, a ring trench was dug around the existing embankment and the Rotensteinerbächle was diverted. This made the Lower Castle a moated castle . The ring moat has meanwhile been filled up again, but the castle moat was still occupied by 196 carp in 1709 . The Lords of Rothenstein remained in possession of the castle until 1417. In that year the Lower Castle (including the entire village of Woringen) was sold to the Ravensburg Möttelin family, known as von Rappenstein. Almost 100 years later, in 1516, the Lower Castle was sold to the Free Imperial City of Memmingen . Later the castle came to the Bavarian state in 1849 and later to the municipality of Woringen. The current shape of the building was erected or rebuilt around the 17th century. The lower castle is a listed building.
