Vicki Genfan (* 15. June 1959 ) is an American fingerstyle - guitarist , composer and singer .

Vita and musical career

Vicki Genevaan started playing guitar at the age of five . Her father played 12-string guitar, mandolin and fiddle , and he had a good voice and was therefore one of her musical role models. Her older brother also played the guitar. She studied classical music and jazz at Ithaca College in New York until the late 1970s . In addition to the guitar, Genevaan also plays the piano , percussion and trombone .

In 1994 she recorded her first self-produced album, Native , which she did not sell commercially on a large scale. In 2001 her self-produced CD Outside the Box was released . In the same year she won the American Just Plain Folks Award for the title New Grass from this album. In 2003 the label Acoustic Music Records released the CD Vicki Genevaan Live , the live recording of a concert as part of the Open Strings Festival in Osnabrück . In 2004 Vicki Genevaan finished second at the Mountain Stage New Song Festival in West Virginia with her song Eleanor . In 2006 the double CD Up Close & Personal was released , on which one CD only contains instrumental pieces, the other only vocal pieces.

Vicki Genevaan has appeared on stage with Tommy Emmanuel , Laurence Juber , Kaki King and Jennifer Batten , among others . She is often compared to Michael Hedges or Pat Metheny because of the unusual technique and her lyrical, flowing style of playing . Vicki Genevaan was featured in several American and German specialist magazines and was sometimes referred to as the "Queen of Open Moods ". In September 2008, she won the Guitar Superstar competition held by the music magazine Guitar Player at the Great American Music Hall in San Francisco .

When she is not on tour abroad, she plays many concerts, both large and small, in the northeastern United States. She is an experienced and good teacher, organizes workshops and also gives private lessons. She is currently working on an instructional video on her techniques and a book that will contain her compositions.

Vicki Genevaan lives in Fairview , New Jersey .

style

Style of play and musical influences

Vicki Genevaan describes her style of music as "Folk meets Funk". It's a mix of jazz, funk , pop and world music in a contemporary folk context. In addition, she commands a number of unusual guitar tunings, harmonies and rhythms, which she combines with driving percussive elements. Characteristic for their playing style are "two handed tappings ", often explosive "tapped" and "slapped harmonics " with one or more fingers of the right hand and slapped bass lines.

Genevaan not only performs as an instrumentalist, she also sees herself as a songwriter . Her singing is successfully supported and complemented by her guitar playing.

Vicki Genevaan names her father as the main inspiration. They also influenced James Taylor , Michael Jackson , Pat Metheny, Joni Mitchell , Meshell Ndegeocello , Marvin Gaye , Jonatha Brooke and Leo Kottke .

Guitars and technical equipment

Genevaan plays a Gibson L-140 , a Gibson LG and an Alvarez Silver Anniversary . The Alvarez -Guitar has a TrueTone - pickup system, two microphones and in the LR Baggs LB6 -Tonabnehmer be mixed on two outputs.

Their 12-string guitars are made by Guild and Luna Guitars . Genevaan also plays a Vega 6-String Deering - Banjo . She uses medium-gauge strings made by D'Addario for her guitars .

Sound engineer Tay Hoyle, who accompanies her on numerous tours and is involved in the production of her CDs, has a large share in the full, clear tone of Genevan's guitar playing.
