2011-2012 Volvo Ocean Race route

The Volvo Ocean Race 2011/2012 was a sailing regatta that started on October 29, 2011 in Alicante ( Spain ), the destination port was Galway in Ireland . When returning to Europe, Lisbon was the first to be visited. Six teams were involved in the regatta. The race was won by the Groupama Sailing Team . The winner of the in-port series was Puma Ocean Racing powered by Berg Propulsion .

Rule changes

Although boats of the VO70 class were also used in this edition of the regatta , there were some changes in the rules. While in-port races were only held in certain ports in the past, these have now been carried out at all intermediate stops. In addition, the overseas stages have been upgraded in terms of points compared to the in-port races. The allocation of points at the so-called scoring gates was completely eliminated. From a technical point of view, the construction of test boats was banned. The number of permitted modifications to the keel , rudder and fins was also limited. Limiting the number of sails and spare parts (e.g. only one replacement mast) should also allow teams with a smaller budget to participate. Since the presentation of the regatta in the media was essential for its financing, even the optical design of the interior of the boats with wall cladding and advertising was prescribed in order to optimize it for video recordings.

Scoring

The Volvo Ocean Race 2011–2012 was held as a stage race. The winner was the team that had scored the most points at the end of the regatta.

placement 1. 2. 3. 4th 5. 6th
In-port race 6th 5 4th 3 2 1
stage 30th 25th 20th 15th 10 5

Boats eliminated in the stage or in the inport race did not receive any points.

Stages two and three were divided into two sections due to the danger of pirates off Somalia's coast, which is why a modified point system was used. For the placement of the longer section 80% of the points were awarded, for the shorter the remaining 20% of the points.

Boats

This regatta was again held with boats of the VO70 class (Volvo Open 70) . Due to the sometimes significant changes in the specifications compared to the previous edition of the race, these boats were also referred to as VO70 v3 analogous to the third version of the rules . Although yachts of this size were also sailed in the last race, all teams with the exception of Team Sanya went into the upcoming race with newbuildings due to the rule changes. While in previous editions of the regatta large parts of the route had to be sailed in the roaring forties , the changed route of the last race, which repeatedly passed the light wind areas of Kalmen and Rossbreiten , required appropriate consideration in the design of the boats.

Basic data of the boats:

  • Length: max. 21.5 m (without bowsprit )
  • Total weight: 14000 kg - 14500 kg
  • Total weight of the keel: max. 7400 kg
  • Draft: max. 4.5 m
  • Mainsail: max. 175 m²
  • Headsail / genoa : max. 180 m²
  • Largest spinnaker : max. 500 m²
  • Normal spinnaker: max. 350 m²
  • Main engine ( Volvo Penta D2-75): 75 HP / 56 kW
  • Use of a regenerative energy source of 80 W to support the on-board electrics ( solar , wind or tow generator )

1) Due to the ongoing problem with pirates in the waters on this route, the route to and from Abu Dhabi was subsequently changed. Coming from Cape Town, the yachts called at the top secret port of Malé in the Maldives , from there they were transported by cargo ship to Sharjah and resumed the race there. The in-port race took place as planned. On the further stage to Sanya, this procedure was repeated in reverse order. Since Abu Dhabi is home to one of the participating teams and an important sponsor, this port could not simply be completely deleted.

1st stage Alicante - Cape Town

The first stage of the Volvo Ocean Race 2011–2012 started on November 5, 2011 in Alicante. The first offshore stage of the regatta was overshadowed by a lot of damage to the boats, three of which had to give up for this section. The mast at Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing broke on the first night . A little later, the Sanya team probably collided with a piece of floating debris . The hull was so badly damaged that the yacht had to give up the race and call at the nearest port in Motril . The Puma Ocean Racing team also had to end the stage prematurely and start under machine Tristan da Cunha after the mast broke on November 21, 2011 in the South Atlantic. Camper had a broken backstage but still reached the destination without any further damage.

2nd stage Cape Town - Abu Dhabi

On December 11, 2011, the regatta field in Cape Town started the second stage. Due to the ongoing pirate problem in the northwestern part of the Indian Ocean , the second stage was divided into two parts. The first led the fleet from Cape Town to Malé in the Maldives. However, the goal was only announced to the public after the start of the second part of the third stage. While in the lead, the Sanya team had to call at a port in Madagascar on December 19th due to damage to the rig . In Malé the boats were loaded onto a cargo ship and brought to Sharjah . From there they started on January 4, 2012 for the second 98  nm long part of the second stage. On January 7, 2012, Sanya resumed the race to the unknown harbor in order to secure the points for the first part of the second stage despite the interruption of the race. From there, the team returned to the regular course of the race with the second part of the third stage.

4th stage Sanya-Auckland

At the time of the start of the fourth stage on February 19, 2012, the weather conditions in the South China Sea were severe, with stormy winds and wave heights of over eight meters. For the safety of the boats and their teams, the race management decided to divide the stage. It started at the scheduled time, but not with destination Auckland. Instead, the yachts completed a 43 nm long course near the coast and then returned to the port. The teams reached the intermediate goal in the order Telefónica, Groupama, Abu Dhabi, Sanya, CAMPER and finally Puma. No points were awarded for this section. However, the actual leg to Auckland was started in exactly this order with the corresponding backlogs starting with Telefónica at 23:00 UTC.

During the last miles of the stage, Groupama suffered a leak in the bow section through which approx. 1.5 m³ of water penetrated. Due to the strong waves, delamination damage had occurred in the bow area . However, the leak was sealed and Groupama saved the lead at the finish.

5th stage Auckland-Itajai

In this very eventful stage, five of the six racing boats that took part were damaged so severely that they either had to stop the race temporarily for repairs and call at a port or even abandon the stage entirely.

Just six hours after take-off, a bulkhead broke in the bow area near Abu Dhabi due to the heavy weather , through which the forces of the small jib are introduced into the hull structure. Skipper Ian Walker then decided to return to Auckland to have the damage repaired by the shore crew. As it was difficult weather with gusts of up to wind force 11 on the New Zealand coast at the time of the return to the race, Abu Dhabi turned around for a few hours in the protection of the island before they started the race again.

On Puma, one crew member injured his back, another dislocated his shoulder. Considerations of calling at the Chatham Islands in order to collect the injured crew members there were, however, ultimately rejected due to the improvement in the weather and health.

On March 22nd, while in the lead, the rudder stock of the starboard rudder broke on Sanya . The water ingress could be stopped, but skipper Mike Sanderson nevertheless decided to return to New Zealand.

Even Camper was not without damage. As with Abu Dhabi, a bulkhead came loose in the front part of the fuselage. However, the damage could be temporarily repaired at a time when the wind was weaker. Nevertheless, Camper ran into the port of Puerto Montt ( Chile ) for thorough repairs and stopped the race for 5 days.

Next it hit Telefónica, which was tossed on its side by heavy waves and suffered structural damage to the hull. First, the team slowed down and announced that they would be calling at the port of Ushuaia ( Argentina ) for repairs. While Groupama and shortly afterwards Puma rounded off Cape Horn , Team Telefónica's plan was optimized so that a small boat from the land crew drove towards the racing boat to an island near Cape Horn, and the repairs were carried out in the wilderness within just 17 hours. At the same time an injured crew member, the bowman Antonio "Ñeti" Cuervas-Mons, was recovered. After that, Telefónica resumed racing and chasing the leading boats.

In the meantime, these two boats fought head-to-head in an unstable and weak windy weather system close to the Argentine coast. Telefónica was able to use a much better weather area further east to shorten the gap from about 440 nautical miles to about 56 nautical miles within two days. Groupama broke its mast, 600 nm from the target, about 60 nm south of Punta del Este ( Uruguay ). The boat stopped the race and entered the port of Punta del Este. After assessing the damage, the team decided to only repair the boat temporarily and to drive it to the destination under emergency rigging.

On the last 200 nautical miles of the stage, Telefónica came within 0.5 nm of Puma, but they were able to successfully defend the lead with covering tactics to the finish. The two boats crossed the line on April 6th in Itajai after 6,705 nm and with a distance of only 12:38 minutes. Groupama finished the stage on April 10th and was able to secure third place and 20 points. Finally, 11 days later, Camper reached Itajai and finished the stage.

Telefónica was in the lead until mark number 3 when they rounded the wrong mark at mark number 4. They only recognized their mistake when they were already on a downwind course to mark number 5 with the gennaker set. Due to the necessary recovery of the gennaker and crossing back to mark number 4, they could only finish the race as the last of the started boats.

8th stage Lisbon - Lorient

On the way back from the Azores to Lorient, the fleet was faced with a sharp depression. While in the lead, a rudder blade broke in a jibe at Telefonica on June 15th. The installed replacement rudder also broke shortly afterwards with a patent jibe. Therefore, the team could only continue the stage with reduced speed. But other teams also struggled with the conditions. At Groupama, bowman Brad Marsh had to clear the mast head in heavy seas.
