Vorkuta ( Russian Воркута́ ; Komi Вӧркута Wörkuta , scientific transliteration Vörkuta ) is a city north of the Arctic Circle in the European part of Russia . It has 70,548 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).

The city is located in the Komi republic at the northern end of the Urals Mountains on the Vorkuta River of the same name . The Pai-Choi Mountains , the northwest continuation of the Ural Mountains , extend northeast of Vorkuta .

history

The Vorkuta labor camp for political prisoners existed from May 10, 1938 until at least 1960. At the same time, up to 73,000 people were imprisoned, including prisoners of war and political prisoners from Germany , thousands of whom were killed. The prisoners were deployed in coal mining and mining.

The city was connected to the Pechora Railway in 1941 ; this connection had been established by prisoners of the camp. On November 26, 1943, Vorkuta was granted city rights. It played an important role as a center for labor camps in the Gulag . In the summer of 1953, shortly after Stalin's death, there was an uprising in Vorkuta among the camp inmates , which, after brief successes, was bloodily suppressed. As a result of the events, however, the Soviet leadership felt compelled to grant amnesty first to the criminals and later to some of the political prisoners. It was Adenauer's credit that after his visit to Moscow in 1955, the last German prisoners of war and political prisoners from the early days of the GDR were released in Vorkuta. During the time of the labor camp, a total of almost two million prisoners were deported to Vorkuta and forced to work.
