history

The name Waldkirchen already suggests that it is a forest and a church. Forest was cleared to build a church. The first church stood on the 571  m high Petersberg as early as 800 , probably made of wood from the surrounding forest.

Local historians see signs that the first church was built as early as the 8th century, in the "pre-Willibaldine" period, and is probably on the site of a Germanic place of worship. The parish, which from the beginning had the Apostles Peter and Paul as patrons, is one of the original parishes in the diocese. As early as 1000 there was a stone church here, which soon became the target of petitions from the surrounding areas and developed into a place of pilgrimage. As a result, people became more and more aware of it, and the name "Petersberg" soon became synonymous with Waldkirchen.

Until 1007, Waldkirchen probably belonged to the Regensburg monastery Sankt Emmeram , it then came to the newly established diocese of Bamberg and shortly afterwards to the diocese of Eichstätt . The year 1053 is likely to have been an important year in history. In a document dated 6 June 1053, Waldkirchen first mentioned and gets under the Eichstaett Bishop Gebhardt I. the market law . This right is still exercised today at the annual parish fair.

The Church of St. Peter and Paul has always been called a pilgrimage church, even though the importance of pilgrimage came to a standstill after secularization around 1802. The dean's pilgrimage has remained, once a year. In addition to the parish church, Waldkirchen had a school very early on. The two school houses from 1889 and 1963 are still standing, a previous building stood on the site of today's war memorial. At the church, school and some farms there was always the parish economy on the Petersberg, which the pastor had to run in order to provide for his maintenance. In addition to the parsonages from 1874 and 1970, which are still in existence today, the former parsonage stood close to the north of the parish church (today an annex).

Until 31 December 1975 Waldkirchen belonged to the unified community Hermannsberg and was on 1 January 1976. according Ittelhofen reclassified. On July 1, 1976, Ittelhofen and Waldkirchen came to Seubersdorf in the Upper Palatinate.

As a Catholic church, the parish church belongs to the Neumarkt deanery and thus to the Eichstätt diocese. The church is dedicated to the apostles Peter and Paul and celebrates its patronage on June 29th. It is protected as a monument with D-3-73-160-24 .

The nave was built in the late 17th century. The oldest foundation walls of the tower date back to around 1600. In 1762 the tower was rebuilt. The Chapel of the Holy Cross was probably added to the north at the end of the 18th century. In 1922 the nave (with gallery and organ) was extended to the west.

In the nave of the church there are three baroque ceiling paintings, some of which were painted over by Walter Scheidemandel in 1967. The ceiling painting above the organ comes from him and from the same period as a new creation; it represents St. Cecilia .
