Building history

The pilgrimage church in the Rococo style was built in the course of the Counter-Reformation during the term of office and reign of the prince provost of Berchtesgaden Julius Heinrich von Rehlingen-Radau . The foundation stone was laid on March 17, 1724 and the roof structure was put in place on May 13, 1725. Their first organ was probably set up in 1746 by Johann Christoph Egedacher or someone else from this family of organ builders based in Salzburg . The church tower was only added between 1834 and 1836 and therefore lacks a baroque onion dome, which is typical for the rest of the building . Instead, the roof is kept simple and unadorned in the form of an eight-sided shingle pyramid. Between 1979 and 1980 the church and organ were completely renovated or overhauled.

Furnishing

Statue of St. Christopher

The single-nave church has five altars . Your high altar has a late baroque structure with marbled columns. Above the capital is the eponymous picture of the Visitation of Mary , flanked by Maria's parents Joachim and Anna . On the ambulatory are St. Florian and St. George .

The ceiling painting comes from Innocent Anton Warathy , who was living in Burghausen at the time, and shows the homage to Maria by the client, Prince Provost Julius Heinrich von Rehlingen-Radau , and probably also his successor, Cajetan Anton Notthracht von Weißenstein , who was still in the office of dean at the time . Four smaller frescoes on the ceiling show the miraculous image of the altar, which, according to the parish chronicle, was transferred to the Ettenberg Church on September 9, 1733 from the Ramsau pilgrimage church Maria Himmelfahrt (also known as Maria Kunterweg ): The Temptations of the Virgin, her hour of death and the sea battle of Lepanto .

In the organ gallery there is a late Gothic colossal figure of St. Christophorus from the 17th century with a height of 4.30 m.

Cultural traditions

The blind widow Maria Euphrosina Knoblachin, b. von Höfl, from Salzburg, donated a large fortune in 1746 for a so-called "40-hour prayer" to be held annually in the pilgrimage church for "eternity". When the foundation's sum had decreased due to various economic crises, the three-day prayer was shortened to one day, namely the first Sunday after Annentag on July 26th. The resulting “Ettenberger Annafest” developed into an integral part of Berchtesgaden customs.

Parish involvement

In addition to the parish church of St. Nicholas and the Sanctuary of the Visitation as a daughter church, the parish church include the Holy Family and St. Francis Church as part of the parish of Holy Family in Berchtesgaden district Au for Pfarrverband Marktschellenberg in Marktschellenberg . On November 1st, 2015 the parish association Stiftsland Berchtesgaden was founded, to which the three parishes St. Andreas Berchtesgaden , Hl. Familie Au and St. Nikolaus Marktschellenberg merged, and which was expanded on June 1st, 2019 to include the parish Herz Jesu Bischofswiesen .
