Wassil Spassow

Wassil Spassow ( Bulgarian : Васил Спасов , in the English transcription of FIDE Vasil Spasov ; born February 17, 1971 in Varna ) is a Bulgarian grandmaster in chess .

Life

In 1989 Spassow became world champion of the under 20s in Tunja, Colombia . Although he was tied for first place with Jacek Gdański from Poland , he won the World Cup because of his victory in the face-to-face encounter with Gdański, who had meanwhile already led the tournament with a 1.5 point lead. Spassow was awarded the title of International Master after winning the world championship .

Spassow was Bulgarian single champion five times: 1990 in Sofia , 1997 in Shumen , 2000 in Asenovgrad , 2003 in Sofia and 2008 in Plovdiv .

His Elo rating is 2541 (as of October 2016), which puts him in sixth place on his country's rating list. He had his highest rating of 2621 in September 2010.

National team

From 1990 to 1998 and from 2002 to 2006 Spassow took part in all eight chess Olympiads for the Bulgarian national team. The best performance with the Bulgarian team was fifth place at the 1994 Olympics in Moscow . He also took part in the European Team Championships in 1992, 2001, 2003 and 2005.

societies

Spassow played for the Macedonian club SK Alkaloid Skopje , with whom he took part in the European Club Cup twice. In Germany he played in the 2nd Bundesliga West for the DJK Aufwärts St. Josef Aachen in the 2011/12 season .
