Antoaneta Stefanowa is the only Bulgarian player to hold the grandmaster title and was the women's world champion from 2004 to 2006 .

The list of Bulgarian chess players contains chess players who are or were eligible to play for the Bulgarian Chess Federation and who meet at least one of the following conditions:

General

As of May 2020, there are 32 grandmasters (including Antoaneta Stefanowa as the only woman ), 54 international masters (including two women, Nurgjul Salimowa and Iwa Widenowa-Kuljašević ), 7 women's grandmasters and 17 international women's champions for the Bulgarian Chess Federation as of May 2020 eligible to play. Six grandmasters, five international masters (including the only woman Silvia Collas ), two women's grandmasters and four women's international masters are no longer eligible to play for the Bulgarian Chess Federation, four grandmasters, eight international masters, two women's grandmasters and one honorary grandmaster of the women have already died. Vesselin Topalov was 2005-2006 champion of FIDE , Antoaneta Stefanova 2004-2006 world champion of women.

In correspondence chess, as of February 2016, four Bulgarian players had the title of Grand Master, ten that of an Honored International Master, 20 that of an International Master (including Sabina Karaptschanska as the only woman ) and four that of a Women's Grand Master. One of these honored International Masters has already passed away.

By April 2016, the Bulgarian individual championship was played 80 times and the women's championship 65 times. The record champions are Oleg Nejkirch and Kiril Georgiew with six titles each, Margarita Wojska won the women's competition with eleven titles the most.

Another two Bulgarian players achieved a historic rating of over 2500 before June 1971.
