Ivo Donev (born December 25, 1959 in Russe , Bulgaria ) is a professional Austrian chess and poker player . Donev is one of three Austrians to win a bracelet at the World Series of Poker .

In 1987 Donev was the first qualified chess coach to graduate from the Sports University in Sofia , Bulgaria. In 1990 he won the International Trinec Chess Masters Tournament in what was then Czechoslovakia . He was then awarded the title of International Master at the FIDE Congress . When he reached 3rd place at the Dornbirn Open in Austria in 1990 , he decided to live in Vorarlberg as a professional chess player. From 1991 to 1994 he was the coach of the Austrian youth national team at various European and world championships. Ivo Donev is also a three-time Vorarlberg national champion. In 1996 he wrote a chess book entitled The Most Important Ideas in Endgame . In 1997 Donev played in the three highest leagues in German-speaking countries. At Inter Salzburg in the national league A (Austria), at the Eppingen chess club in the 1st Bundesliga (Germany) and at the Zurich chess company in the national league A (Switzerland). His father, Hristo Donev, was a national chess master in Bulgaria.

Career

Donev read many poker books by David Sklansky , Mason Malmuth, and Tom McEvoy and practiced poker programs on his computer. He won in 2000 a bracelet for his world championship title in 1500 $ Omaha limit in the World Series of Poker in Las Vegas , for which he 85,000 US dollars received. In 2002 Donev competed in Late Night Poker and finished fifth. In 2003 Donev finished the World Heads-Up Poker Championship in Vienna as a semi-finalist . Donev also represented Austria at IPC 2 .

Donev himself states that he now prefers poker to chess, as the complexity of the game of poker does not approach that of the game of chess, making it easier for beginners to learn.

Donev was the first Austrian poker player to reach over $ 1 million in tournament winnings. He has now won over 2 million US dollars, making him the third most successful Austrian poker player after Thomas Mühlöcker and Matthias Eibinger .

Cashes at the World Series of Poker

Donev has made it into the money 25 times so far, including 20 times in the main tournament series in Las Vegas and five times in the expansions in London in 2008 and Rozvadov in 2017 and 2019 .
