Wassili Alexandrowitsch Schischow ( Russian Василий Александрович Шишов , scientific transliteration Vasilij Aleksandrovič Šišov ; born May 26, 1961 in Kuibyshev ) is a former Soviet boxer . He was world champion of amateur boxers in 1986 and multiple European champion of amateur boxers in the light welter and welterweight division .

Career

Vasily Schischow grew up in Kuibyshev . He comes from a family in which boxing was a tradition; even his father was a good amateur boxer. As a child, he first played football, but then began boxing in 1974 at the age of 13. His first coach, who looked after him for a long time, was Viktor Pischchew. In 1978 he was the first Soviet junior featherweight champion. In 1979 he joined the Red Army. His new coach was Valery Frolov there.

In 1979, Wassili Schischow also celebrated his first major international success. He reached the final at the Junior World Championships in Yokohama in the lightweight, in which he was, however, narrowly and controversially defeated by 2: 3 judges' votes against the American George Blake .

In 1980 Wassili Schischow was European Junior Lightweight Champion in Rimini . He defeated there u. a. Axel Hättig from the FRG , Joni Nyman from Finland and in the final Thomas Schulz from the GDR on points.

The year 1981 was the big breakthrough in the career of Vasily Schischow. Although he was absent from the Soviet championship this year, he won the light welterweight title at the 16th championship of the armies of the Warsaw Pact states with a victory over the Bulgarian Nikolai Ganew . Then he also convinced at the European Championships in Tampere . In the light welterweight division he celebrated four superior victories over Joni Nyman from Finland , Shadrah Odhiambo from Sweden , again Nikolai Ganew and Mirko Puzović from Yugoslavia and was the first European champion of amateur boxer welterweight at the age of 20 . Towards the end of 1981, Vasily Schischow also won the World Cup in Montreal . There he defeated Crisanto España from Venezuela , Amarte Amarboye from Ghana , Faruk Janjoon from Iraq and Rick Andersson from Canada and won this tournament.

1982 Vasily Schischow was the first time Soviet champion in the seniors with a victory over Manvel Muradjan , who was his main competitor in the USSR as a junior . At the world championship this year in Munich , he then went to the light welterweight division as one of the favorites. However, he met the Cuban Carlos García in his first fight , against whom he lost by breaking off in the third round. He was eliminated and only came in 17th place in the final bill.

In 1983 Vasily Schischow was defeated in the Soviet championship in the round of 16 of the light welterweight division against Oleg Menshikov on points and only finished 9th in this championship. But he was still used at the European Championships in Varna and won his second European title there in the light welterweight division. He defeated Shadrah Odhiambo, Mauricio Ronzoni from Italy , Yordan Lesow from Bulgaria and in the final Mirko Puzović on points. At the 1983 World Cup in Rome , he reached the semifinals, in which he lost 2: 3 judges' votes against the Cuban Candelario Duvergel in the light welterweight division.

In 1984 Vasily Schischow won his second Soviet light welterweight championship with a point victory over Vyacheslav Janowski . But he could not go to the start at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles because of the boycott of these games by the socialist states.

1985 Vasily Schischow was again Soviet light welterweight champion, but was not used in the European championship. Instead, he started at the 20th Championship of the Armies of the Warsaw Pact States in Budapest , where he won the final over Darisz Czernij from Poland by clear points.

In 1986 Vasily Schischow won his fourth Soviet light welterweight title by winning points over Erik Khakimow. After that, he focused entirely on that year's World Cup in Reno . At this world championship he was certainly one of the best boxers of this entire tournament, because he became the new world light welterweight champion with five point wins. After a slight opening win over Pedro Sainz from the Dominican Republic, he then had to defeat four world-class boxers in his further four fights to win this world title. These were Siegfried Mehnert from the GDR , Eduardo Correa from Cuba , Mirko Puzović and, in the final battle, Howard Grant from the United States.

In 1987 Vasily Schischow won the fifth Soviet championship title, but in the welterweight division, in the final of which he clearly beat Israel Akopkochjan with 5-0 judges' votes on points. He played his last major international tournament at the 1987 European Championships in Turin . In the final of this championship he defeated Siegfried Mehnert just 3: 2 judges' votes on points.

Although Vasily Shishev had not yet participated in the Olympic Games - he was still too young to qualify in 1980 and suffered the Soviet Olympic boycott of the Los Angeles Games in 1984 - he resigned from active boxing at the end of 1987 the chance to take part in the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul is not true. With a world title, three European titles and five Soviet senior titles, he was still one of the most successful amateur boxers of all time.

Vasily Schischow played 275 fights in his career, of which he won 265.
