Location of Wehrden in Beverungen

Wehrden is a northern village in the town of Beverungen in the Höxter district , North Rhine-Westphalia . The place has around 800 inhabitants.

geography

Geographical location

Wehrden is located in the Weser Uplands on the left bank of the Weser between the Beverunger town of Blankenau and the Höxteran town of Godelheim at the foot of the Wildberg. The triangle North Rhine-Westphalia / Lower Saxony / Hesse is located near the village .

Neighboring communities

Wehrden is in close proximity to the cities of Beverungen and Höxter . Across from Wehrden on the other side of the Weser is the municipality of Fürstenberg (Lower Saxony) with the Fürstenberg porcelain factory in the Fürstenberg Renaissance castle.

history

It can be assumed that Weredun , according to the Celtic spelling of the place, is much older than the first mention in a deed of donation from 860 of the Hessian Haduwy , widow of Billunger Amelung II. , To the imperial abbey Corvey.

From that date exercises Corvey the manorial over Wehrden. Later the place was given to the noble family von Amelunxen as a fief. In 1697, the prince-bishop of Paderborn , Hermann Werner von Wolff-Metternich zur Gracht , established the von Wolff-Metternich family fideikommiss , consisting of the estates Amelunxen , Wehrden, Schirmeke and Löwendorf .

On April 8, 1945, units of the 16th US Infantry Regiment crossed the Weser near Wehrden with assault boats. On the Eschenberg south of Fürstenberg they encountered a strong German position that had orders to hold out .

Wehrden has had a partnership with the French municipality of Woignarue in the Somme department since 1965 .

Until 1969, Wehrden was an independent municipality in the Beverungen district . As part of the municipality reform in the Höxter district, Wehrden merged on January 1, 1970 with the city of Beverungen and the ten municipalities of Amelunxen, Blankenau, Dalhausen, Drenke, Haarbrück, Herstelle, Jakobsberg, Rothe, Tietelsen and Würgassen to form the new city of Beverungen.

politics

coat of arms

The old gold over red divided coat of arms of Corvey forms the basic colors. A wavy blue field in the lower part symbolizes the Weser, while the wolf in the upper field comes from the coat of arms of Prince-Bishop Wolff-Metternich , who built the castle and church in Wehrden. The bishop's staff reminds of the many connections with the Corvey Abbey and the Diocese of Paderborn, the cornflower in Wehrden as a flower village at the time of the Kornacker seed breeding business.

Close to the Weser is the Castle Wehrden that Hermann Werner von Wolff-Metternich to the canal from 1696 to 1699 on the remains of an older Gräftenschlosses was built and is still owned by the family of Wolff-Metternich / from Köckritz. The so-called Drosteturm, which stands a little apart, was part of the moated castle. This romantic looking tower was the favorite place of the Westphalian poet Annette von Droste-Hülshoff when she visited her aunt in Wehrden between 1818 and 1822.

The Catholic Church “ Holy Family and Saint Stephen ”, which was built by 1699 on behalf of the Prince-Bishop, is located between the castle and the village of Wehrden . The architect of the two buildings is Ambrosius von Oelde .

park

An old, privately used park belongs to the castle, as well as the adjoining public "New Park" from 1895, which extends to the Weser cycle path [R99].

The following trees are designated as natural monuments in the castle park:

Economy and Infrastructure

A wood processing company, two tree care companies, farms and the E. Weyrath School for people with learning disabilities are located in Wehrden . Wehrden also became known through the Max Kornacker seed breeding company, founded in 1841 , which produced flower and useful plant seeds and exported them worldwide. In the 1930s the company had up to 300 employees. At that time, the townscape was dominated by extensive fields of flowers and vegetables around the town center.

traffic

Wehrden is located below the federal highway 83 , which comes from Bückeburg along the Weser to Bebra . The next junctions to the federal motorways 7 (Nörten-Hardenberg) and 44 (Warburg) are 54 and 35 km away.

Train stop

Wehrden is the only village in Beverungen that has a train stop . With the Sollingbahn there is an hourly connection in the direction of Ottbergen (–Paderborn) and Göttingen . The Lauenförde-Beverungen train station is in the neighboring town of Lauenförde . Until 1984 the Wehrden station was the junction between the Solling Railway and the Holzminden – Scherfede railway line . The station building, which has since been demolished, was located on an island between the two routes.

The landing point for the Oberweserdampfschifffahrt is located directly on the village green by the “Fährklause” restaurant. A river-driven passenger ferry ( Gierseilfähre ) to the opposite "Eulenkrug" invites the cyclists to change to the neighboring Lower Saxony. Between the landing point and the passenger ferry there is a replacement crossing point that is still clearly visible today .

The closest commercial airports are Paderborn-Lippstadt and Kassel-Calden .
