Weschkaima ( Russian Вешка́йма ) is an urban-type settlement in the Ulyanovsk Oblast in Russia with 6,619 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).
geography
The place is about 90 km as the crow flies west-southwest of the Ulyanovsk Oblast Administrative Center on an elevation between the Barysch river and its left tributary Weschkaima, in the area of the Volga plate .
Weschkaima is the administrative center of the Weschkaimski Rajons as well as the seat of the municipality Weschkaimskoje gorodskoje posselenije. In addition to the settlement, this includes the villages of Bely Klyutsch (12 km northeast), Khovrino (8 km northeast), Kotjakowka (12 km southeast), Krasny Bor (9 km southeast), Oborino (10 km north-northeast), Oserki (7 km south ), Weschkaima (7 km northwest) and Vyrypajewka (9 km northwest) and the Salesny settlement (5 km southwest).
history
The place was created in 1898 in connection with the construction of the Insa - Simbirsk railway line , when a station named after the river or the village of the same name located about seven kilometers to the northwest was built there. The name is probably of Erjan origin. The village was established as a fortified settlement in the course of the Karsun -Simbirsk Verhaulinie in the 17th century .
The station settlement developed at an accelerated pace from the beginning of the 1920s and on January 25, 1935, became the administrative seat of a newly created Rajons named after her. In 1957 the place received the status of an urban-type settlement.

Weschkaima has a train station at km 793 of the railway line ( Moscow -) Insa - Ulyanovsk, which opened in 1898 .
The regional road 73K-1431 runs through the settlement, which begins on the federal trunk road R178 Saransk - Ulyanovsk, which passes around 40 km to the north , through the neighboring district center of Karsun, 20 km to the north, and from Weschkaima further southeast to the Ulyanovsk - Barysch road. To the south, the 73K-1432 branches off directly to the small town of Barysch, a good 40 km south.
