history

The place was founded in 1638 by Strelizen as Sysganskaja sloboda in the course of the Simbirsk-Karsuner Verhaulinie , named after the river. In the 18th century the place got its current name; alternatively, after the local church, the name Dmitrijewskoje was used for a time. As a result he belonged to the Ujesd Karsun of the Simbirsk governorate .

In 1935 Basarny Sysgan became the administrative seat of a newly created Rajons named after him, and in 1938 it received the status of an urban-type settlement. In 1956 the Rajon was dissolved and merged into the Insenski rajon with its seat in the small town of Insa located 30 km to the northwest . In 1989 the Rajon was newly formed.
