Minna Kautsky , b. Wilhelmine Jaich (born June 11, 1837 in Graz , † December 20, 1912 in Berlin-Lichterfelde ) was an actress and writer . Her novels are strongly influenced by socialism and the ideas of the contemporary women's movement . She also wrote under the pseudonyms Eckert and Wilhelm Wiener .

Life

Minna Kautsky was the daughter of the theater painter Anton Jaich, who lived in Prague with his family from 1845 . Kautsky occasionally appeared there as an actress at the Niklastheater and the Stadttheater . In 1854 she married the landscape and theater painter Johann Kautsky (1827-1896) and had a daughter and three sons with him. In the following years she worked as an actress in Olomouc , Sondershausen , Güstrow and at the Czech national theater in Prague until she had to give up acting in 1861 due to a lung disease. She lived in Vienna from 1863 to 1886 , where her husband got a job as a court theater painter. Then the family moved to St. Gilgen and in 1904 to Berlin.

In 1870 she wrote an article in a clerical Bohemian newspaper under the pseudonym Eckert . This was followed by articles in the social democratic New World and, under the pseudonym Wilhelm Wiener, some articles in the theoretical organ of the social democracy of the new age . In 1885 she joined the Vienna Writers and Artists Association and served as its president from 1886 to 1887. She became acquainted with socialist ideas through her son Karl Kautsky in 1875 and visited Friedrich Engels in London in the summer of 1885 . Marie von Ebner-Eschenbach visited Minna Kautsky between 1889 and 1889 in St. Gilgen , where the Kautsky couple lived in Villa Kotzian .

She was friends with Wilhelm Liebknecht , Victor Adler , Franz Mehring and Rosa Luxemburg . From September 20, 1904, she first lived with her son Karl in Berlin "Friedenau bei Berlin Saarstrasse 19" then separately in her own apartment in "Friedenau near Berlin Ringstrasse 17". She died on December 20, 1912 in the district hospital in Berlin-Lichterfelde a pneumonia . According to a will, her body was cremated on December 23, 1912. Numerous newspapers reported her death.

She had three well-known grandsons: the economist Benedikt Kautsky , the chemist Hans Kautsky and the Austrian theater painter, set and costume designer Robert Kautsky .

My social novel, which the Berliner Vorwärts and the Hamburger Echo bought for the first time, has just been completed in these pages. It deals with a part of the women's question in its broad context, which affects all classes, and has met with an extremely favorable, in part enthusiastic reception. A Russian and an Italian translation are in preparation. I am now looking for a publisher for the book edition. Mr. H. Dietz , who published my last novels, has no actual novel publisher and is currently fully occupied with the publication of larger scientific works, so he will also have the idea, which he had so fondly cherished, that of a cheap popular edition of all of my novels in Staple, no longer execute. But for the time being it is only about the publication of the Viennese novel "Im Vatershaus", and for this your publishing house, which is so active, was particularly recommended to me. Indeed, he seems to have set himself a great and grateful task. He sees what is new and worth reading not only in the presentation of sexual problems; he has recognized that in a time of growing social knowledge, the process of development of society, which is advancing inexorably, takes up the greatest interest; success has not failed to materialize. May he stay true to you! I live in a circle in which researching social problems is a life's work and you will certainly not miss the treatment and characteristics of my novel truth and accuracy. I will send the same to you at the same time. He'll speak best for himself. I will be in St. Gilgen near Salzburg until mid-September and in Friedenau near Berlin Ringstrasse 17 from September 20 onwards. I would be delighted if you could find a reason to get closer to my work […] ”(Antiquariat Inlibris, Vienna am August 20, 2020)
