Willy Maß
Wilhelm "Willy" Maß , also Mass and Mahs (born April 2, 1880 in Berlin ; † June 4, 1947 ), was a German architect . He worked in particular in Bad Godesberg , a current district of Bonn .
Live and act
Measure was Catholic denomination; Little is known about his origins and training. He was temporarily in Remagen located from where he took off in 1909 to Bad Godesberg to be there with his "company for high - and Civil Engineering " settle. In 1909/10 he took over the company of the Rüngsdorf master builder Georg Westen (1851–1921), which already a little later (as of 1913/14) consisted of an architecture studio , a construction company and a building materials store, employed several architects and in the Rüngsdorf district (Rüngsdorfer Straße 53/55) was located. In 1911, Maß had the villa at Kronprinzenstrasse 2 built in the back yard of the office building according to his own design , where he lived with his family. In 1913 he became a member of the Deutscher Werkbund - the second artist from Godesberg after the painter and graphic artist Louis Ziercke . In addition to building private villas , he succeeded in asserting himself in orders from local industrial companies, for which he sometimes worked as a "house architect" - for example at the Ringsdorff factories in Mehlem , the Kleutgen & Meier confectionery factory and Schiller'schen Patentverschluß AG. Christoph Brüggemann was an independent, long-time employee of Maß's architectural office who later worked as an architect in Godesberg .
Residing in Siegburg from 1916 , Maß moved back to Godesberg in September 1918. He lived there with his family in various houses, including Dürenstrasse 33 and Rheinallee 34 . In 1926 Maß founded the Maß'sche Grundstücks-GmbH on the occasion of the construction of a settlement in the Plittersdorf district . In 1928 he won a competition for buildings ( morgue / chapel, gatehouse ) on the city's new central cemetery , which can be counted among his most important works. At the end of the 1920s, Maß deepened its political commitment in Bad Godesberg and since then has played a larger role in the city's public life. From 1933 the only employed architect in the Maß'schen architectural office was Robert Wahle. Maß und Wahle were able to implement their largest new building in 1937 with the - privately awarded - main office of the Stadtsparkasse Bad Godesberg, which remained the only major public building project in the city during the National Socialist era . At the latest with a construction stoppage caused by the Second World War in July 1943, Maß 'architecture office was shut down and could not resume its activities even after the end of the war, as Maß became seriously ill and died in 1947.
In Bad Godesberg at least 80 villas, larger residential buildings, industrial and public buildings go back to Willy Maß's architectural office, 23 of which (as of 2006) are listed . His design language varies between neoclassicism , expressionism and, in a later phase, a locally influenced Bauhaus style .
Public engagement and memberships
At the time of the German Empire, Maß belonged to the Godesberg mayor's council as the "most wealthy landowner" . Since 1914 he was chairman of the board of the general local health insurance fund (AOK) Bad Godesberg and since 1928 chairman of the "Verkehrs-Verein Bad Godesberg am Rhein eV". He was also a member of the board of the “Gesellschaft für Festspiele Bad Godesberg eV”, the supervisory board of the “Vereinshaus Zur Lindenwirtin (Aennchen) GmbH” and, from 1928, the supervisory board of the “Gemeinnützige Bauverein GmbH”. In 1929, Maß ran for the Reichspartei des Deutschen Mittelstandes (Economic Party ) for the municipal council in Bad Godesberg and the district committee of the Bonn district , in which he subsequently moved in. He was also chairman of the Godesberg branch of the economic party. In 1933, Maß 'candidacy for the municipal council was unsuccessful on the list of the “non-partisan municipal association”. On May 1, 1933, he joined the NSDAP .
family
From about 1906/07 Maß was married to Maria Linder, widowed Heider (1880–1935). The marriage resulted in three children, of whom the younger son Erwin worked in the father's company before the Second World War. Since 1946 he ran his own architecture office with a partner, which was located in the previous building of the now closed company of Willy Maß (Rüngsdorfer Straße 53/55). Erwin Maß became head of the building department in the federal capital office of the state government of North Rhine-Westphalia and was involved in the planning of a total of 20 settlements in Bonn from the 1950s to the early 1960s, including the so-called " Tessenow settlement" and the Mittelstrasse settlement / Donatusstraße in the Plittersdorf district .
