Witowo ( German  Ittowen , 1927 to 1945 Gittau ) is a village in the Polish Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship . It belongs to the rural community Jedwabno (1938 to 1945 Gedwangen ) in the Powiat Szczycieński ( Ortelsburg district ).

Geographical location

Witowo is located on the north- eastern shore of Lake Braynick ( Jezioro Brajnickie in Polish ) in the southern center of the Warmia-Masurian Voivodeship , 34 kilometers northeast of the former district town of Neidenburg ( Nidzica in Polish ) and 13 kilometers west of the current district metropolis of Szczytno ( Ortelsburg in German ).

history

Gittau - after 1574 Vittona called - was founded in 1410 and was composed of small farms and homesteads village. As a rural community , Ittowen was incorporated into the Burdungen district (Polish : Burdąg ) in the East Prussian district of Neidenburg from 1874 to 1945 . In 1910 the village had 160 inhabitants.

On November 23, 1927, Ittowen was renamed "Gittau". The number of inhabitants was 153 in 1933 and 125 in 1939.

As a result of the war, Gittau was transferred to Poland with all of southern East Prussia in 1945 . The village received the Polish name form "Witowo" and is today with the seat of a Schulzenamt (Polish Sołectwo ) a place in the network of the rural community Jedwabno (1938 to 1945 Gedwangen ) in the powiat Szczycieński ( Ortelsburg district ), until 1998 of the Olsztyn Voivodeship , since then Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship . In 2011 there were 242 residents registered in Witowo.

Ittowen or Gittau was parish in the Protestant Church of Neuhof (Neidenburg district) in the church province of East Prussia of the Church of the Old Prussian Union , as well as in the Roman Catholic Church of Jedwabno in the then diocese of Warmia .

Today Witowo belongs on the evangelical side to the parish Jedwabno in the diocese of Masuria of the Evangelical-Augsburg Church in Poland and to the St. Adalbert's Church in Nowy Dwór in the current Archdiocese of Warmia .

Witowo is located at the end of a side road that branches off from the national road 58 at Warchały (Warchallen) in a northerly direction and leads directly into the village via Brajniki (Braynicken) . There is no connection to rail traffic . The village is connected to the public transport bus network.
